UC Berkeley -

Thanks!

YOU=
UCLA -match
UC Berkeley - martch

FRIEND=
UCLA - low reach to match because of SAT scores
UC Berkeley - low reach to match because of SAT scores

THANKS! oh and my bad, his rank is 58
so u think if he gets his SATs up to 2000 he'll have a good shot?

anyone else have an opinoin?

YOU=
UCLA - in
UC Berkeley - in

FRIEND=
UCLA - low reach to match because of SAT scores
UC Berkeley - low reach to match because of SAT scores

Both you and your friend have very high chances of getting in

you
UCLA - IN
Cal - IN

friend
UCLA - high match/low reach
Cal - high match/low reach

Yes he will have a good shot regardless.

u are in.

ur friend has to work a little harder maybe, but he's got good chances.

you're friend will not get in, sat scores are too low maybe UCI or UCD

thanks for all the opinions!
is SAT pretty much the only way now to boost his chances?

he has a good gpa, but yeah if his SAT improved to 2000+ i'd say it'd go from a low-reach to a high-match.

thanks everyone so far!

This a little late, but I just thought I should add my two cents. I'm at Berkeley now, and living a suite. To give you a reference on what it takes to get in, my four room/suitemates all had 3.9-4.0 unweighted GPA in high school and one posted a higher SAT score than you, but the other three were lower, and one was in the 1900's. You should be just fine in getting in, but your friend will be right on the border, and if he does get in, I would guess that he would be a spring admit. The one roommate with a higher SAT than you was a fall admit, the other three were spring. Good luck to you and your friend.

I personally say you are both in.

My friend with a similar GPA, similar ECs as your friend, and a 1870 made it to Cal last year.

Good luck.

I think illrawg estimates it best.

You will get in--although a lack of "leadership" hurts you from a holistic point of view.

You friend will be borderline, and is likely to be either a spring admit or rejected outright. He/she suffers from lower SAT scores, a lower GPA, and few ECs than you--and still has a lack of leadership activities--same as you do.

The fact that he/she is at least in the top 10% is good, but UC Berkeley generally accepts in-state students only in the top 7% of their graduating class--which your friend is not.

I'd say that UCLA is much more likely to accept your friend--but that acceptance at neither school is certain and the next tier of UCs may be the more likely choices (UC San Diego, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Irvine).

Good luck to both of you, but your friend should definitely consider sending any additional information that would advance his/her candidacy--such as recommendations, awards, new (higher) SAT or ACT scores, etc.
