To start off, her test scores are very good. She also seems like a very genuine person - make sure that comes through in her essays. However, her ECs are not anything special. I am familiar with Brown and Amherst, and as they tote their schools for having unique students, I’m not sure your friend will qualify as one of them. But, if she writes interesting essays, anything could happen! Chance back?

Yeah, we’re both so worried about ECs bc we live in this small town without the same opportunities these kids at magnet schools and cities are afforded. I will try to make sure my passion and devotion to Brown shines thru and do the best I can! Thanks for helping! -the friend

Admissions officers judge applications based on the context of the applicant’s school. Obviously someone from a small town in the mid-west will have less opportunities than someone living in New York City, and admissions officers won’t hold that against you. Your friend sounds like a good candidate for these schools, but admissions is so unpredictable. Build a college list with good matches and safety schools as well.

Love of learning is KEY, so tell your friend to make it shine through!

No APs makes the overall seem kinda worse, but other than that she seems like a great candidate to her schools. See if she can take any AP classes online over the summer? Oh, she took 9 APs - those are the ones under course rigor. Sorry for being unclear. !
