Chance my son for UCs/CSUs [3.93 GPA, 4.21 WC GPA for UC, CS/E, ME, or data science]

Is UC Scout an option for taking Calc BC?

https://www.ucscout.org/courses/ap-calculus-bc/

It would not be calculus BC at a college, but a calculus 2 (for engineering, physics, or math majors) course would cover that material for a student who knows the calculus AB material.

I’m pretty sure CC registration for spring 2024 won’t open until late fall. I’ve never heard of any CA community college that does online classes you can take anytime/outside a regular semester.

Agree that UC Scout may be your best/only option - but an expensive one.

(sorry- reply meant for @smbayguy)

I will check DVC for class availability for Spring 24. I checked Assist.org for the compatible course code and it’s 193 at DVC which maps to Math 1B for Cal(as example). I think all UCs should have same articulation agreements though individual UC course numbers may be different.

Since I can’t enroll him till say December at DVC, can I say it’s a planned course (like we add for HS) and will it have any negative consequences if he cannot get/complete the class at a CC?

Thank you all who are giving valuable suggestions. Please keep them coming.

Not sure how you plan to meet the pre-req for MATH-193. I think you might have to take MATH-192 (calc I) in spring and MATH-193(calc II) in summer.
( if it is quarter system, then two adjacent quarters).

They do not, although calculus mostly varies in terms of quarter versus semester system. DVC, UCB, and UCM use semesters, but other UCs use quarters.

He completed Pre-Calculus and was eligible for Calculus BC this year. Are you saying its year long course like in HS at CC?

Worst case, he has 5 years of Math and will say taking AP exam with Kahn Academy/Self studies.

Yes. Calc BC (HS) = Calc I + Calc II (in college, semester system).
Not sure if college will allow you to test out of Calc I and take Calc II directly like you prefer to do.

I am not sure, my Kid at Cal is taking Math 1B this semester(Aug-Dec) and he did Calc AB only.

I will get this confirmed when I visit DVC.

UCB Math 1B (second semester calculus) is the suggested course to take after a 5 on calculus AB (3 or 4 may take Math 1B, but some may be better in Math 1A).

With only precalculus, the usual course to take would be UCB Math 1A or DVC Math 192 (first semester calculus).

Not quite answering your question - but my DS had to take a US History course with the CC in the spring (not a requirement in our state - but to fulfill CA’s requirements). I talked to the AO about it to make sure it would count. (It was a 6 week accelerated course and it counted as a year via Cal Poly). As long as he can get in before he graduates - it should count towards another year of math if his AP CS doesn’t.

Following this thread, and I am curious if that matters.

It matters as a way to assess the ability to apply calculus.

Generally AP Physics Mechanics is preferable for engineering applicants to top schools.

Here is a link to look for community college classes online (asynch and synch). They have not uploaded 2024 quarters/semesters yet.

However, you can do searches for FALL 2023 and see what colleges had what. You would want to do a search by “I do not have a home California college” AND by “Keyword”. Subject Mathematics is very limiting for some reason.

I have found doing a current quarter/semester search is helpful when future quarters/semesters are not posted yet so you can find where certain classes were last held at, go to those specific colleges websites and generally they already have the upcoming class schedules posted where you can see what will be offered. Just remember there is a matriculation process for all the campuses and some take longer then others and different requirements.

Son will be applying to 3 CSU colleges: Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona and SJSU

Cal Poly SLO - Mechanical Engineering (Mechatronics if he can get in)
Cal Poly Pomona - Computer Engineering (Higher than last year Impaction threshold score of 4410)
SJSU - Software Engineering (His score is well above threshold for last year score of 4800)

Still working on his PIQs for UC application.

Concentrations aren’t competitive once in major. If they get ME, they can declare any concentration they want. Best of luck.

FYI, only Mining and Geological Engineering qualify for WUE at University of Arizona: Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) | University of Arizona Admissions

Most WUE at all Universities is limited to campuses and majors (same for ASU).

I know you were replying to @tsbna44.

My son will not be applying outside CA and only to UC/CSUs.

Yes and understood. Now that I re-read the message from @tsbna44 I think he wasn’t saying WUE for Univ of Arizona. The $30K off is based on the GPA.
