if you back-calculate GPA needed from SJSU Impaction Index, seems like CS needs a 4.3 GPA (3440/800) and Software Engineering a 4.0 GPA (A-G+Math) (4800/(800+400))? Is such a big difference in GPA expected for similar majors? what might be the reason?
It’s just about popularity. SE is and easier admit at Cal Poly too, although getting closer to CS.
Computer Engg and Software Engg at SJSU are in College of Engineering whereas Computer Science is not.
For CoE admissions, they add Math GPA*800 to the score.
Software engineering is a less common major, and may be overlooked by those who would see it as a reasonable alternative to computer science if they knew about it. So it may get less application volume relative to its capacity than computer science. (Of course, capacity for both is somewhat connected, due to the amount of common course work, but capacity for each major is likely based somewhat on course work specified for one major but not the other.)
I believe the CoE Math adder is GPA*400.
### Impaction Consideration Factor: College of Engineering Only | ### Impaction Point Calculation Value |
---|---|
Math Coursework Grade Point Average (GPA) | 400 points x Math GPA |
Sorry, you are correct. Its 400 and not 800.
Cal Poly requires Algebra 2 to be on the transcript, even if advanced math is passed.
My son completed Algebra 1 in Middle School and Algebra 2, Geometry and Pre-Calculus at High School.
Submitted App for CSUs: Cal Poly SLO, Pomona and SJSU.
Next step: waiting for PIQ#4 to be done so UC app can be submitted too.
UCB, UC Davis, UCSC, UC Merced - we are applying 100%. Rest not sure at this point of time(UCLA maybe).
Any reason to not considering UCSB? Not too far away from the bay and gets a lot of NorCal admits.
No specific reason, son is not showing any interest. UCLA because my best friend lives there. I am expecting him to have challenges with college food (Picky Vegetarian).
Same reason for giving priority to colleges nearby so he can be home on weekends if needed.
How picky?
Given he’s ELC, there’s no need to pay the $70 for UCM unless he wants to go there more than some other UCs. If he’s shut out (rejected or waitlisted) then he’ll receive the UCM offer free of charge automatically.
Plan is to spread out his majors: Mechanical at Berkeley, LA, Cal Poly SLO and CS at Merced, Davis and Santa Cruz & Cal Poly Pomona, SJSU - Software Engineering
Can’t explain how picky he’s, been telling him that he will have a difficult time once he steps out. He went on camping for a week couple of times, but this is different.
His brother at Cal is coming home more frequently on weekends as he had tummy upsets with the Vegetarian food served.
Just want to plan for the worst.
I sent you a DM.
Got Portal sign-ups done for Cal Poly SLO, Pomona and SJSU.
Waiting for DS1 to come home tomorrow to review DS2 essays and hope to submit his UC app by the weekend.
Finally submitted UC Application yesterday. Fingers crossed now till March 2024.
Applied to multiple UCs except San Diego, Santa Barbara and Riverside.
