It’s hard to go by stats alone. Yours are very impressive. Four questions: (1) what are your ECs?; (2) do you plan on applying early?; (3) do you have any hooks?; and (4) which one(s) do you plan on demonstrating true interest in?
@NJDad68
Ec: Volunteer at hospital
Volunteer with the siblings of children with cancer
Member of National Art Honor Society
Member of Science Olympiads (I was a finalist regionally)
I plan on applying early action to uva and tulane but not sure about early decision
Hooks: My dad went to emory undergrad (my aunt also went to Emory if that makes a difference)
I plan on demonstrating interest at Emory, Uva, Tulane, and Wash u
You are in good shape for the schools in which you plan to show interest. In this ridiculously competitive environment, “good shape” means you are likely to hit on one and if the ball bounces your way two or even three of the four. Best of luck to you!
With current test scores, chances are good for Tulane. Might have a good chance at Emory with the legacy, but it’s getting really competitive.
As a previous post mentioned, Vandy is really stats driven so 35 ACT/1550+ SAT would be helpful. Hopkins, Rice, and to a lesser extent WashU are also Stats driven, but there have been acceptances to this year’s WashU Class with a 32 ACT, although on the safe side 34+ would be ideal.
Didn’t mention your potential major but based on ECs you’re probably thinking about BME/biological sciences. In that case get the standardized test scores as high as possible.
@jh77 All the schools you listed (except Emory and Tulane) are reaches. (But you will need to show interest for Tulane and apply Early Action to have a decent chance for admisson). With your high stats your legacy will help for Emory. But just make sure you do a good job on your essay(s) and overall application. Your ECs are community-based oriented and are good for Tulane and Emory, which value applicants who show demonstrated interest in community service and where the sciences and business are strengths of both of Tulane and Emory. However, I believe your ECs overall maybnot help your chances as much with getting into the other schools you list because you did not hold any leadership positions, even though you were a regional finalist for the Sciemce Olympiads. While volunteering and being an active member of the ECs you list would be good for 99% of the colleges, maybe not so much for the top 20 schools such as Hopkins, Wash U, Rice, and Vanderbilt. Not to say you don’t have a chance at these schools but they are all high reaches. But for WashU if you apply Early Decision and your family is full pay that will help your chances a lot. I would say that if that’s the case Wash U would be a match.
@trackmbe3 I forgot to add to my ec’s before that i have been on varsity tennis for three years (will be four) and that I attended a pre med program at Upenn last summer
Additionally, I’m am hoping to be vice president of national honor society. I will also do a research internship over the summer and I’m planning on submitting a research project to Regeneron Sts (used to be Intel Sts)
@jh7769 My opinion above does not change, as admissions decisions are always somewhat subjective and hence random or a crapshoot at the elite schools you are applying to, which have more than enough stellar applicants that they could fill several classes with if they had room. But these additional ECs and leadership role you list definitely will strengthen your application and increase your chances. Good luck!
