My son is considering WPI. He has a 4.2 gpa, his first round of SAT scores was low...an 1860 (will be working hard to get those up). He hasn't taken the ACT yet. He is a 3 sport athlete ...3 year varsity football and lax, and rec basketball. He is considering college football. Activities: NHS,student council, tutors, peer mentoring, community service, paid employment, entrepreunership activities, plays guitar, project based activities Has received academic and sports awards.

My question: what are his chances of getting in to WPI, and would he have any chance at scholarship money?

I don’t know if you are familiar with the Common Data Set. It is a standard report that colleges fill out every year with a lot of very interesting and pertinent information.

Page 10 o 35 shows the 25th and 75 prcentile for the SATs for students who enrolled last Fall. You can see where your S falls in here.

Page 21 and 22 show what scholarships were given out (an average of $19,474 for the 680 students who were awarded need based scholarships and $13,717 for 206 students who had no financial need).

Also, consider applying Early Action - Round 1. If your S has his application complete by November 10, he would hear back by mid-December and the EA applicants last year had a 67% acceptance rate (signficantly higher than the overall acceptance rate of 57%):

Also, demonstrating interest - visiting the school, having an interview, making clear in his essay why he wants to attend WPI, maybe contacting the Admissions Counselor for his region with a question and mentioning his high level of interest in WPI- might help.

Agree with advice above, apply EAI. If he brings ups the SAT score or does well on the ACT, it will improve his chances for merit scholarship money.
