My D got an acceptance letter. EFC (Expected Family Contribution) per FAFSA's assesment is $48k. Our 2008 Adjusted Gross Income was a little over $150k. Is there any hope to get any financial aid in our case or how much $$$ she would get ? I think we will find out soon....

We're in a similar spot. I am self-employed and had a good year last year, much better than any previous years (with a high 2008 AGI), but don't want to count on that going into the future and am reluctant to commit to WashU at full price. DS is very happy with his acceptance, and now I'm watching the mailbox for the FA information. As you said, we'll see!

If not happy with initial offer, contact the financial aid ofice. You will find them very helpfull and they will try to do everything possible to allow attendance at WashU. The following is from the WashU website: Once you’re admitted to Washington University, we do all we can to make your enrollment a reality:

This year, our undergraduates are receiving nearly $65 million in scholarships and grants from the University.

Many financial assistance awards equal or exceed the cost of tuition.

Washington University offers a program that seeks to eliminate need-based loans as part of its undergraduate financial assistance awards to our students from low- to middle-income families. Students who receive financial assistance come from a broad range of economic backgrounds.

Exceptional candidates for admission can apply for academic scholarships regardless of need. Last year, about 200 academic scholarships were awarded to freshmen based entirely on their academic promise.

Parents can spread their share of the costs over time using our interest-free payment plan, or they can benefit from our competitive fixed interest rate borrowing options, take up to 10 years to repay, and freeze four years of costs at the entering-year rate.

Call Student Financial Services if you have special circumstances we should consider, or if you have questions at any time. We’re here to help. Call: (888) 547-6670 (toll-free), or (314) 935-5900

Same here. Our EFC is ~$25K. I'm hopeful the package is good because we cannot afford to pay $25K/year! I'm anxiously awaiting receipt of the FA package. She's got full rides at several other schools, but this is her first choice and I'm willing to pay for her to go here, but I can't pay $25K/year. She wouldn't make it past the first year!

In my experience they'll initially offer to meet your costs, minus your EFC. If paying the EFC is going to be a problem, you'll probably have to call in and talk to them. It's definitely worth calling in though, if you're not happy with the initial offer, as they are usually very helpful and willing to work with you.

EDIT: Just remember that you're trying to explain your financial situation, not "bartering" for your attendance. :)
