Hello! I wanted to know how US universities look at O levels and A levels. I’ve just given my O levels and the result is as follows : A*s in English Maths Physics Chemistry Biology Add Maths Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies. Unfortunately I got a B in Urdu . I’ll be starting A levels from September and will be taking Physics Chemistry Biology Maths and one from psychology and economics. Im also giving my SAT 1 exam in November. The thing is that my co curriculars aren’t that great. I’ve joined the MUN team and will be attending my first MUN in September. Apart from that I won the Silver Award at the Commonwealth essay competition. I’ve joined the Science and Maths societies as well. I’m part of the team for the Asian Regional Space Settlement and Science competition which will take place in India but i’m not entirely sure if ill be able to go due to financial constraints. I think i have a shot at getting in the Student Council this year. I also run a blog and am working on a book which i hope gets published by the mid of next year. What else do you think i should do to actually have a chance at an Ivy league? Thanks…
Your grades are fine, solid workload in A Levels as well. Don’t worry about the B.
Extra-curriculars: do what you love and do it well. Excel, in other words. ARSSDC is a brilliant EC. MUNs are great if you show dedication. A win or two won’t hurt. If you’re good and enjoy MUN-ning, success should follow. Your blog + essay award gives you a cool edge in writing as well. You can take this beyond with writing for newspapers etc. Maybe earning to write too?
If you can do well in Science competition, you stand a GREAT chance to get into your student council, a great feat in itself. From there on, you can be in charge organizing competitions for your school.
Finally, you can uncover other ECs as well, but try to have a good bulk of your ECs in 2-3 focused areas. It does help to dabble around with other ECs, but don’t try to be a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. Internships, Community Service, Sports, IT, Media, Leadership etc all are other great ECs that I can think of which can boost your app. Stuff like research papers, taking university courses, self-studying advance topics about your dream are good too. Just don’t get too “university-obsessed” and keep taking up small 1-week EC and make your life a miserable wreck IMHO.
SATs and A Level grades play a major role. I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH. Ace them and you are well set for a push. Don’t let your ECs hamper them TOO much.
ALSO, UNDERSTAND THIS: You’re on the right track. Keep going and you stand a shot. You’re never really guaranteed. Around 3~ people per top uni from Pakistan get accepted a year. Also, an Ivy isn’t everything. Plenty of people reject Ivies for other top universities. Just keep that in mind.
Ok so my midyear A levels report is 4A* and 1 A ( history ) Our team qualified as the first runner ups in ARSSDC ( main role in the structure department)and I am part of the school delegation for MUNTR. I was also part of the publications team at my school’s flagship event. Also I plan on applying to Wharton Upenn early decision now so please tell me what else I should do. I gave SAT in november but the score was in the 2000-2100 range so will be giving it again in May and Sat 2 in October. I am also the head delegate for an upcoming MUN in town. Please reply!
