Would a degree in a physics from cal pol still be enough to get into a good graduate school if i had good grades
Yes, SLO has a very good Physics Undergrad program and many students go on to good graduate schools.
Sorry about the double post. Problem with my IPad. If you are really interested in grad school, I would contact the physics department at SLO and ask them how grads end up going.
Would ucsc be better for astrophysics/cosmology or would it be pretty equal to slo
No expert, but UCSC is suppose to have a great Astrophysics program. Definitely check it out and apply.
So just to clarify, would an mca score of 4325 be competitive for physics at cal poly
Not sure. It looks like a decent score but not enough data has been collected
about each major to tell you for sure.
I think your GPA will probably keep you out of SLO. With an EI around 4200, the rest of the CSUs shouldn’t be a problem.
Good luck
@Gumbymom If an applicant does not fit the profile or stats of their intended (applied) major, will CPSLO just reject them or will they get accepted to another program? Thanks.
SLO did accept a few applicants into their alternate majors in the last couple years but according to their website there are no guarantees.
My suspicion is that majors that have VERY low selectivity and yield sometimes pick up students who’ve listed them as second choices. The chance though of getting into AE for example as a second choice if ME passed you over are virtually nil no matter where you would have fit on the AE MCA hierarchy if it had been your first choice. They have WAY too many who want those majors as their first choice.
So would putting ME as first choice and physics as second make sense, or would there be almost no chance on being placed into physics if denied by ME
The safer option would be to pick General Engineering as your second choice. They are anticipating admitting more than 60% of their applicants to GE.
To maximize your chances, I’d pick General Engineering as your primary choice. It’s one of the few majors where they expect students to change. They give an advantage to GENGs over all other majors when switching. No switch is guaranteed, but to switch to AE or ME a minimum of 2.75 is required UNLESS you were admitted as a GENG. In that case the minimum is lowered to a 2.0. It’s more likely you’ll be accepted into GENG with an MCA of 43xx.
I can’t comment on physics, but I’ve never seen an acceptance to ME with an MCA in the 4300s.
Food for thought.
