Unfortunately, two days ago I got myself into a situation with a spiteful young lady who is now hellbent on dismantling my life. This morning she sent me a message, as well as screenshots, of her emailing the college of my dream images taken off my finsta of drug paraphernalia(Two pictures of bongs sitting on a table and a picture of a pipe in my hand though my face isn’t shown). I have never mentioned on this account the actual act of smoking, nor have I ever claimed to partaken in it though I believe the pictures are damning enough in a college’s mind. The pictures are old, I’ve already paid my enrollment, and have registered for classes if that info helps any answers I can get. I’m very scared and need answers quickly.
I’m not sure if this helps either but I graduated with a 90 GPA and I live in New York. I’ve never been arrested for this sort of thing and I’ve never gotten into any trouble for my entire educational career.
Why would your school believe her? Anyone can make a fake account these days which is unfortunate. Just try not to actually get caught with drug paraphernalia (safer alternative would be to abstain completely) or these concerns may become a real issue for you.
As long as your face isn’t associated with the drug pics, you should be fine. I would either delete the account, make it private, or wipe any trace of your face/identity from your finsta.
I honestly have no idea it just worried me because this is my dream school and I’ve been wanting to go since I was 11. Since I’ve been accepted I haven’t done it at all because I’ve been afraid this situation would arise. I deleted the account immediately and am thankful it had no prior ties to my real, public instagram account. Thank you for responding.
Please try not to worry. The college is not going to take it seriously. Even if they contact you, you can just play dumb. Unless you are pictured doing the deed and there is other irrefutable evidence, I can’t imagine they will rescind you. it won’t be the first time that some petty person attempts to sabotage another’s college chances.
Non issue. They probably get dozens of these from jealous or sour grapes people!
Agreed. AO’s did not just fall off the turnip truck.
I’m sure you’ll be fine. But I also think this scare should remind you that your teachers and parents and all the other adults who told you the internet is forever weren’t just being boring, clueless, technologically unsophisticated killjoys. Do not ever post anything ever you would not be happy to have seen by future employers, in-laws, security vetting departments, admissions committees, your parents and your children. Really. No kidding.
In addition, with photoshop it is hard to trust the veracity of any photos.
But keep this in mind going forward as a lesson about the need to be careful about social media.
Since your face isn’t in the picture, you should be fine.
But please don’t post stupid crap like that on Instagram in the future. If you going to be stupid, at least be stupid without putting it on the internet.
^^ Agree. Try hard not to be stupid. There are cameras everywhere.
Best to you at college!
