EXTRA-CURRICULARS/ACTIVITIES

State-ranked swimmer - club swimmer since I was 5. 20 hours of practice every week, all year round (51 weeks out of 54 considering every break between summer/winter seasons). Captain of my club team, Elite Swim Club. Captain of my school team.

*I am a "preferred" recruit at MIT, not receiving athletic support at Penn.

Including next summer, it will be my 3rd year as the Cromwell Hills Summer League Swim Team coach. It is has been my first and so far only paid work-experience. The job lasts for about 5 weeks, and each week I spend 20-24 hours on it depending on whether or not there are 1 or 2 meets that week. Besides being a very socially-oriented job (coaching kids, talking with parents), it is management-oriented too.

*My more business-like responsibilities included: creating spreadsheets for every swimmer organized by age group, times, events, participation, disqualification records. Entering databases into the program Hy-Tek, which created my line-ups before meets. Organizing fundraiser and creating a prize system to maximize participation. Gathering parent volunteers for two pasta parties. Ordering end-of-season awards. An innovation I made that made the team more efficiently run - a "mandatory meet sheet" for all swimmers to sign up for upcoming meets. This way I could be certain which swimmers were and were not coming and I could ensure that every swimmer there would be entered in at least one event.

Debate Team - Placed in the top 16 in open Public Forum debate as a junior (Villiger) and senior at Bronx National Tournament. Also placed in the top 32 in JV Lincoln Douglas debate at various national tournaments as a freshman/sophomore. 10-15 hours a week.

Social Justice Committee - society of juniors and seniors that design two annual workshops that raise awareness about prejudice. Issues we tackled this year were racism and poverty. The group has about 15 total members, and both workshops lead the entire 130-140 freshman class for an entire day. 5 hours a week.

Math Club - involved in taking the weekly test since freshman year. As a junior, began leading the club and tutoring underclassmen on weekly test problems. 2 hours a week.

Economics Club - very very small school club with about 10-15 students. Involved since freshman year. Most recent action was holding a school-wide fundraiser for the club, then using the money to make a micro loan to a vehicle repair shop in Appalachia. 2 hours a week.

*Below is only applicable to the early schools:

Essays: I think they're all really good - I worked on each one a lot and I'm a pretty good writer.

Recommendations: Probably pretty good. Did great in both classes/AP exams, teachers liked me. Additionally, my debate coach wrote a great one for me that emphasizes my versatility, intellectuality, and leadership.

Interviews: Both were great. The Penn interview told me at the very end explicitly that I impressed him by answering all his questions in a stellar manner. The MIT one went very well, and was about two hours.

All of the information you provided is excellent. You’re definitely qualified for all the schools you want to be chanced for… But even with that being said, admissions in the top schools is a crap shoot. I think you have a really great chance of getting in to Duke and Rice, but the others are hard to predict.

Good Luck :)

Chance me?

you are a competetive applicant at every college on your list

Penn ED: decent chances
why ED to penn?
i think you have solid chances at other colleges

good luck to you

Your stats and resume are top-notch and you will be extremely competitive at all the schools on your list. What is your class rank or decile? Did the swim coach at MIT happen to mention where you rank, amongst his group of swim recruit recommendations, and how many on average were taken the past few years? Sometimes this is shared with a top recruit in a particular sport. My neighbor was given this information (in another sport) who, like you, is applying EA to MIT.

Best of luck!

U will probly get into mit and duke, too bad you have to go to penn

You are a very strong candidate for all these schools. I think you have a great chance at MIT, Duke, Penn, Rice, U Chicago, Dartmouth. Harvard is a reach as it is for everyone else :stuck_out_tongue: Good luck!

Chance me back please (:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1241354-decent-gpa-high-sat-1-weak-ecs.html</a></p>

Sprinter246 - thanks. I chanced back on your thread

20more - I chose ED to Wharton because my primary interest is in business (management/mathematics). If I am lucky enough to be accepted at MIT, I would pursue a similar path there with Sloan. That’s pretty much the explanation behind my early applications.

jshain - Our school doesn’t class rank. The only thing resembling that is an award for the top 10% of the class, which I am in (nothing further than that is given). The coach at MIT invited me along with around 15 other guys to a recruiting weekend trip at the campus in late September. All of us received recommendation letters. I’m not sure what the number of accepted swimmer recruits generally are, but I know for the class of 2015, the recruits were incredibly strong, and at the top-tier for all of DIII schools, and were Ivy-League level recruits. I’m not sure if this correlates to their acceptance, or if they just all happened to be freakishly fast and smart, though. We’ll see.

jdlace - thanks for the very optimistic outlook. I hope so.

bump bump bump

yo you’re in hahaha

bump post

bump .

not to state the obvious but you go to delbarton … they do a TREMENDOUS job getting their kids into where they wanna go. you should really have no problem, especially since you have good credentials. congrats man!

thanks stealthyscholar. and I’m assuming you’re in NJ, cause I do go to delbarton haha

You will undoubtedly get into MIT.
I think you have a very good shot at Penn, seeing as you did ED and that’s around 25%.
The same goes for the other schools. Congrats.

Thank you!

stealthyscholar - i just remembered what my username was…haha nevermind

bump bump .

I’d say you have a good chance everywhere but Harvard is going to be difficult for anyone. Your test scores are killer but I think the only thing holding you back is not really having a wide range of ECs but I could be wrong. Other than that, you’ll probably getting into one of those Ivies and UChicago/Rice/MIT.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1243215-chance-me-ucs-privates-will-chance-back.html</a>.</p>

You got really good chances at all of those schools, but are you from that one NJ school up near Hackensack? B/c I hear they have a crazy SAT averages which go to like 2100’s. You’re safety school is probably MIT all b/c you’re a preferred recruit and your interview sounds like it went extremely well, which if that’s your safety, then I don’t know what college you can’t go into.

Chance me hahaaa…

thanks for the chances. a lot of people have been wondering what school i go to, so here is the wiki for reference: [Delbarton School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Delbarton School - Wikipedia)

Super strong candidate…

Early Decision: Penn (Wharton) - I think you’ll get in.
Early Action (Unrestrictive): MIT (preferred recruit) Accepted if deferred from Penn UChicago - Match
Dartmouth - High Match
Duke - High Match
Harvard - Better than most
Rice - Match
