Hook story: I hope you guys don't think I'm a troll or something. I've been looking at threads since 2009 and finally had the courage to make this account. I was born in the US, but I moved to Korea, then back to the US in third grade, then back to Korea to attend the rest of elementary school up to ninth grade, and finally came back to a US high school to begin sophomore year. This was all because my parents are divorced and my dad doesn't make much money to support me, so i have to live with my relatives in Korea. My English was basically ESL level when i first arrived 2 years ago, but I strove to prove others (and myself) wrong. I've done the best I could given the resources I have, and I hope the colleges will recognize this and condone my limited extracurricular activities.
My counselor knows this story and likes me for my modesty.
My US history honors teacher thinks im a genius...and my Calculus teacher said I was his "perfection."
My essay will center around this and I hope it is good
I look forward to all your suggestions on my college choices and I wish everyone in the class of 2016 the best of luck moving forward.

Also, if my father made around 50K last year but had no income (unemployed) this year, how much financial aid will i be able to receive? thank you very much!

My counselor knows this story and likes me for my MODESTY.

My US history honors teacher thinks im a GENIUS…and my Calculus teacher said I was his “PERFECTION.”

something isn’t aligning here… ;)

thank you for replying. I NEVER brag about my sob story to anyone openly. But my counselor knows that I’ve overcome a lot in my life…My history teacher said to my dad in a parent teacher conference that I was the “best student” he has ever had. MY calc teacher when i asked him for a rec said the very words that i was his “perfection” in class. I’m really being honest and hoping for some opinions on my chances as well as the financial aid, my dad can’t pay for college without it. thanks again everyone.

I’d say your chances are as good as the national acceptance rates. You have great scores, but your extra-curriculars aren’t the most amazing ones out there. Great scores, research, tennis- sounds like the stereotypical Asian applicant. One thing that will set you apart, though, is the low-income status. Most Ivy leagues favor that in an applicant for “diversity” purposes, so that should help. Your parental contribution should be close to nothing.
I’m sorry if any of this sounded harsh, but I’m just trying to answer your question. Don’t get me wrong- you still have a good chance. Good luck!! :)

thanks so much. i think the main reason my extra-curriculars aren’t so good is because i spent my sophomore year adjusting to a completely new life and didnt really know what was going on around the high school. I joined all the clubs and activities in junior year and became officers in some. I’m really not expecting much, but i will still keep my hopes up.

well then make sure you explain that in your essays :)

Just out of curiosity, was your Siemens project individual or team?

my siemens project was last year’s and was a team project since i was an underclassman. could you guys give me some chances to the schools i listed, i really appreciate all your support.

You would have been a shoo-in if you applied through questbridge (did you?).
Otherwise your chances are good, but they aren’t that special. I’d still put you at above average chances because of your income.

SOrry for my naivete, but what is Questbridge? My father didn’t attend college in the US and I am doing all the researching myself.

You do not sound modest at all, instead you sound pretentious and self-pittying. Your scores are excellent, which you already know. But that’s not enough to get you into HYP, they will want to know what you really care about and what you are going to add to campus. Other than possible knowledge of Korean culture, what are you going to add to a college campus?

You are lying about Siemens, poor folks don’t have the resources to compete in that.

^um…how can you say that? Are you saying kids with low income can’t compete with affluent kids in science? I found the research opportunity myself without pulling any strings. Unicorn-I will add to a campus what any other kid adds to a campus. So can you tell me what YOU are going to add to a campus that’s so special?

Dude, the fact that you only have 8 posts and your arrogance really suggests that you are indeed a ■■■■■. Please stop this nonsense and misinforming people on this forum.

well hi im korean too. i mean i think you are a strong applicant. but i dont think your story is that special.a lot of my other koren friends have similar stories or even more dramatic ones. but anyway i know a person who moved to US at junior year without knowing much english and still managed to get into Chicago Vanderbilt KAIST so best luck of you.

Thanks for everyone who helped. I realize that what I said before were really arrogant, and I don’t deserve anything that I thought I deserved. I have overcome some challenges in life, but there are many others who have succeeded in face of even more adversity. I apologize if I came off as pretentious or anything. I have paid less and less attention to the colleges that I will ultimately attend since a long time ago. Wherever I go, I know I will work hard and strive for the best, and i will always remember there are a lot more unfortunate people than I am. Peace.

I think you would be a really good fit for Wharton. Good chances at all those schools in general. Best of luck!
