I am deathly horrified after my sem 1 grades of my junior year. I hope that i will get accepted at BROWN through my ECs and because of my geographical region. Living in a rural setting in Montana, i hope, will get me into brown as they seek a diverse student body. Also recs and essays can be assumed to be great as I ve been working on them for months while this is still by junior year.

i think the only major downfall for me is my gpa, 3.75 and class rank.
do you think that will kill me even with the excuse?

please leave comments. :)

Class rank isn't everything. :) You seem like a strong student. Keep up the good work!

thanks. i was happy to know too that brown under the collegeboard admission facts, that they didnt concentrate too much on gpa or class rank

Heres the list:

brown
rice
amherst
northwestern
u of chicago
rochester
nyu
dartmouth

tell me what you think!

add more safeties. i dont think adcoms will be impressed by the fact that you are clearly smart (high SATs) but are in the bottom 15% of your class, regardless of circumstance. they like to see that you have achieved academic excellence in the face of adversity.

Brown concentrates on class rank and gpa, a lot.

Don't count of geographic diversity, unless you address it in your essays.
your ecs are stellar, but will certainly not make up for your class rank.

so do you think i could make brown then?

no, sorry. but you should still try if you're sure you want to go. i applied to some super reaches, and i probbly won't get in, but i love them.

the others?

omg...60/70.

I don't know what to say Does a 2300 SAT make up for a horrible class rank? I really have no clue.

IMHO no, a good sat score shows that you have the ablity to do well, and that class rank shows how you put that ability to work.

as for the others, i really don't know...i would say they are all reaches, except maybe to rochester.

do you go to a very competitive, well known school? it would help if you did. but, for example, in my highschool, the bottom 15% doesn't got to college. (although i doubt they get 2300s on their sats, if they take them)

is there any way that you can bring your rank up...maybe retake classes at summer school?

no its not very competitive, but we have had excellent students that have gone to brown for example. iam hoping that their rep will help my status to prove that its a difficult school....

as for rank and summer school, i dont think the independent study part in our state would benefit my rank status as iam going to get a 4.0 sem 2 for junior year. so any classes taken after junior year would be put in the sem2 of juinor year not helping me at all really.

or is there another way to alleviate my sit?

moreover, i have the most rigorous coursework in our grade hands down.
do you think if my counselor addressed taht, that my class rank problem will be diminished?

btw thanks woohoo!!!! for the advices so far :)

Wow, you have a 3.75 and your rank is that low? is the GPA out of 4.0 or 5.0? Do you go to a really competitive school, or is there a lot of grade inflation?

damn, dude. you're clearly smart (SAT score) and driven (ECs). how did you end up sixtieth in a class of seventy?

chances at brown are, unfortunately, low, due to your rank.

and, what kind of crazy grade inflation does your school have? a 3.75 puts you that low?

out of 4.
our school is not competitive, pretty much just our grade actually, but the other grades are intense.

the only reason ive fell behind is that pretty much in our grade no one takes hard classes besides a very select few.

so i was wondering if class rank would matter if my counselor addressed the rigorous course work i followed

and that my ECs would override

please remember, that i am just a high school senior, and i don't know much about anything...that said,

Taking the hardest courseload is a good thing, however, if there are others who are taking those classes that have better class rank then you, and are applying to the same schools as you then i don't think it will help that much. But, having your couselor address this is, of course, a good thing.

Your ECs are good, but unfortunatley (for you) selective colleges need to see that you can handle the tough coursework that, say, Brown offers. It is great that you are involved in your community and stuff, but that DOES NOT make up for your class rank.

If your heart is truly set on Brown, don't, by any means, kiss your dreams goodbye. there are other ways to get to brown, go to some state school, do well and transfer, grad school.

I don't think you'll get into Brown as a senior though, there are just too many other students that are more competitve then you.

It may happen though, so don't give up!
