Chance to bring SAT score to 2200+

Okay so ive gotten the BB and barrons and have been practicing taking many Practice tests and looking over the lessons given in each books to improve. So far ive gotten 730+ in Math but only 650 + CR and around 670 + W (thats giving my essay a general score). I was wondering if you guys know any trick to improving my CR score especially because honestly to me, it seems completely subjective. Please please please tell me any tricks or hints you guys can give (especially those with high CR). Also please recommend and vocab books to study and or other study guides for the SAT, which books helped prepare you best?

The Critical reading section is the hardest to improve. I myself only managed to go from a 613 to a 700 in 8 weeks. A key thing to remember about critical reading is vocab, if your vocab is solid you can do the sentence completion in around 3 minutes if not less (aim to only get 2 wrong max on the whole test). Also try reading different passages first to see what works for you i.e. longer passages first, then shorter ones, then the sentence completion. This should help. Again a lot of critical reading is vocab. You won’t see improvement unless you have a solid vocabulary. 1-2 thousand SAT words highly recommended. 50 a day in 9 weeks you’ll have all of them done then some.

hi i am laus deo and i would like to ask: how do u improve ur timing on the sat

BUMP! could someone please tell me tips for some CR ?

I disagree with what Jetacle says, except that CR is the hardest to improve.

Solid vocab is definitely NOT of main importance. You only need to know about 1k words (which are http://img.sparknotes.com/content/testprep/pdf/sat.vocab.pdf</a>) to do about 95% of the SC, and the rest is guessable. And 50 words a day? Holy cow, either you spend like 5 hours on vocab a day or forget them all the next day. Your choice. And by the way 9 weeks 50 a day is 9750=31.5*100 = 3150 words total.

I prefer not to move around in a section. SC is usually the easiest, and gives me an ego boost after I finish all the SC questions in like 1 minute. Short passages are warmup for the longer ones.

Tips? Do what the question asks you to do, not what you think it asks you to do. reread the question. agree with the passage however stupid it might seem. for example, if passage says that sharks are cute, then yeah they’re cute. but NO they’re not cuddly or cool, but they’re cute. All I can attest to is that practice +practice+practice (actually knowing what to practice and how to practice though) will make your score shoot through the roof.

I was actually in the same exact range as you regarding the CR, anyway.
I managed to get up from a 600 to 750 in 2 weeks, believe it or not. And yes, the scores were not rigged, etc. They were all scored by a machine, and all the tests were taken in the time allotted for the real SAT.

For those two weeks, however, I chained myself to the library and just memorized a bunch of vocabulary. That said, you have to know how to use the words - blindly memorizing won’t help. You should be able to use these words in a sentence. And with the passages, you should take as long as you need on them, until you’re sure that your answers are correct. Only once you reach that point should you start timing yourself. I found this to be the most helpful, because if you’re within that 650+ range, most of your mistakes will come from the harder, more general questions on the reading passages (i.e. main idea, compare two passages…)

Vocabulary:
On the practice tests, if there are any words you don’t know (from the passages, sentence completion, etc.) make index cards! Barron’s has a list of 3500 words in their SAT book, and that’s pretty good. I haven’t used Direct Hits yet, but I ordered it and it should come this week! Will let you know how that is…
Princeton Review also has a very nice set of 500 Vocabulary Words.
If you don’t want to go out and buy it…

Quizlet has a bunch of vocabulary lists too, so look at some of those if you’re ever at a loss for words (excuse the wording… )

For the writing section, the best you can do with that is just memorize the rules and practice! Expose yourself to all the different types of questions. Look at which ones you get wrong frequently (IDing error, improving sentences, passage based) and then practice those.

These videos are very helpful. Some of the videos are a bit rudimentary, but these definitely helped me to raise my score.
