Chance w/OOS Merit?

@magnetnh Applications are all going out this week! Very excited to finally be done with this phase.

UConn is definitely one of the few in her top tier.

Lexluthor5 did you ever get an answer about the merit being 15k as “qualifies for” or gets?

@lexluthor5 ^^^

@beachmama1 no, not really. It sounds like that’s pretty much what they give everyone with pretty good stats. I could be wrong, but that’s what I have penciled in for them. At this point, she already has 2 similar schools at a COA of what UConn would be with $15k off so if they don’t get to around there, UConn would be unlikely for our daughter.

@lexluthor5 same here…really need it more in the 35k range to make it possible…I know someone last year with 3.8 and 1350 who got nothing and that’s similar to s

@beachmama1 was the person with 3.8/1350 and no merit oos? I’m sure it’s a lot harder to get money instate and the coa starts so much lower.

UConn probably won’t be an option for us either if we don’t get the cost close to $35K as well.

Long wait yet though. Not sure why they wait so long. Our daughter could wind up loving any of the 3 schools we are going to accepted students days in February.

@lexluthor5 he was oos…it does stink that uconn will be dead last for decisions

Totally agree. Son got decisions on his other top schools and U Conn is the last. But it’s his top pick too. Let’s see.

Went to uconn to visit earlier this week and spoke with admissions…they said honors invite is mid to high 1400s this year and merit money is only for top 10% in their class

@beachmama1 our school doesn’t rank, but they do put out a sheet that approximates rank range based on GPA. Our daughter is definitely not in the top 20% though. Still, the rep who visited the school and my daughter spoke to on a couple of occasions said that he stats could (or maybe she said should) qualify her for $15K merit. I doubt that top 10% rule is accurate. It may very well depend on many other factors. UConn would be one of her attractive options with a $15K merit award, but if not, she’s got other solid options already on the board. I would be a bit surprised if she doesn’t get that, but we’ll see.

@Lexluthor5 I hope I’m wrong but we sat across from the admissions rep on a one on one convo and she said applications are viewed holistically but for merit it is definite cutoff of top 10% regardless of what high school you go to…she said even if kid from top 10% in one school doesn’t even compare to top 10% in another school it doesn’t matter…”each kid earned top 10% with what was offered to them” and that is their cutoff
My son is top 15 so left feeling discouraged

@beachmama1 I guess we’ll see. Maybe since our HS doesn’t rank, they do not go to the chart that is available (which would clearly show our daughter isn’t in the top 10%) and goes to other means at that point. Having a top 10% cut off for merit would be a very high bar. Our daughter has received very generous merit offers from schools that are similar to UConn. I’d be very surprised if she got $0 from UConn.

@lexluthor5 Even if schools do not rank, they will provide a rank for merit or other scholarships. This was the case at my S school so you may want to ask your school how it would be handled and get an idea of the rank if it were to be provided.

@magnetnh yes, our school has a profile sheet that gets sent and it shows a various gpa ranges and went rank that rank would be around. My daughter’s recollection was that the uconn rep come to our school and based on whatever was said, our daughter felt that a 3.5gpa with a 30 act should qualify for $15k merit. I do recall confirming that with the rep at a college fair after. Our daughter is closer to a 3.7/32 superscore now. Maybe we’ll be all wrong and she’ll get nothing since she’s not in the top 20%, but if I were betting, I’d go with that she does get it. UConn would be completely out of line with what’s been received from similar schools if she were to get nothing. We’ll see. I hope everyone in here winds up being happy with the results.

Finally got the answer. $18.5K/year, plus honors program. Very surprised about both.

@lexluthor5 That sounds fantastic! Is Uconn still in play or are you waiting for others? Last year the April visit was amazing so hoping you can make it on campus again…

@magnetnh no, she’s decided to go elsewhere. Very nice offer from UConn though.

@lexluthor5 Congratulations on your choice.
