Does he need financial aid? It makes a big difference for international students.

He is a US citizen. He needs financial aid. Thanks. Peter

Ok, thanks. Many schools publish their "Common Data Set" which shows, in sections C7 to C12, the profile of the most recent entering freshman class. From Reed's CDS, I would guess that Reed would be a slight reach for your son. E.g., his ACT composite is in the bottom half, English is in the bottom third, but his math is in the top half. :) His SAT reading is in the bottom quarter. Grades can be hard to compare, but Reed's average is 3.9 out of 4.0.

But chances at Reed can be difficult to estimate, because Reed is looking for a good "fit" with students, where a strong mutual benefit is important. The application essay is very important, and the interview is considered important.

I see from your other posts that your son is interested in a wide variety of schools. I trust that he'll find the right place. Maybe it is Reed.

Best of luck in the search!

Is the 3.9 average legit? Do they factor in electives as well? Is it unweighted? My daughter has a 3.8 UW in her 5 academic subjects, it's weird to think that would be in the bottom half there.

Reed's 3.9 is legit (see Reed College 2007-08 Common Data Set SecC section C12, and http://web.reed.edu/convocation/marthers.html), and it is weighted. Schools typically have their own weighting formula, but it is not necessarily public, and I don't know Reed's.

A weighted gpa sounds more like it. How do you know this, though? It wasn't indicated on the data set, and I wasn't able to open the second link. Thanks for the clarification. Is there any way to find out Reed's weighting formula? If they publish the weighted gpa they should also publish their formula, in my opinion.

Sorry, I had a typo; remove the ")" from the end of the second link. The "weighted" comment is in the fourth paragraph from the bottom. Reed might not say, but you could email admissions admission@reed.edu and ask.
