Okay I'm trying to get into the university of michigan.

Grad year: 2010
Race: white but from eastern Europe
Unweighed gpa: 3.94
Weighed gpa: 3.96

I'm taking four AP classes next year though so I'm estimating to have above a 4.0 and summa cumme laude

AP exams: average 3 or 4

No sports, little volunteering, hoping to get into the national honor society

Act:23 but I'm retaking it

I've lived in Michigan for a long time and am hoping to go for microbiology

I hope I can make it

Anyone? Please, i’m too anxious.

Good GPA.

UMich is selective though. ACTs are pretty low - def. retake.

What did you get on your SATs?

I got my fingers crossed for you!! Good luck!
:)

Also, the fact that you live in state…might help. But UMich is a private school, so - it really depends on the applicant pool.

Your GPA is great, but I don’t understand the discrepancy between it and your testing score. You should definitely retake it, and attempt the SAT to see if it suits your learning style better. A few prep classes and guide book are also worthy investments.

Your EC’s really fail to present a portrait of who you are as an individual. You should try founding a club this year. It would be an accomplishment if you could find a way to make microbiology (an esoteric subject) interesting to your peers. For example, you could do a club activity where you make your own yogurt (isn’t it filled with living cultures?) or have a swine flue question and answer session where you distribute hand sanitizer.

And by “white but from Eastern Europe” do you mean that you’re an immigrant or that your family is ancestrally Eastern European?

UMich is public I’m pretty sure, and the sat isn’t required for it so I never bothered to take it. Is that a mistake? My main concern is that I have absolutely no EC’s. And I think that will be a problem.

Yeah I was born in Europe and lived there for 6 years and still visit

It looks like they accept either SAT or ACT, but since your ACT was so low you might want to try taking the SAT to see if you are naturally more inclined to score higher on the SAT. (This is something students usually determine in sophomore/ junior year by taking the PLAN and PSAT and comparing scores. Did you take these? If so, which test did you score better on?)

You might also want to get involved in initiating a cross-cultural exchange between your school and a school in your motherland. For example, you could start a drive at your school to raise funds for science materials for an underprivileged school in your home country. This would tie together the most unique aspects of your application - your interest in science and your immigrant status.

Lol the thing is that I’m a great student and hardworker that’s why my grades are good but if I even go near a standardized test, it’s as if I never even went to school in the first place. I don’t know why. Maybe I’m nervous or something but I just do horrible whether it be the act or the sat. I scored higher on the act but my score is still way low.
