Hello!
I'm about to be a senior in high school, and I was just wondering what my chances were, in being accepted early decision at UChicago and Vassar, and regular decision at Yale, Brown, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Wisconsin Madison, UPenn, Cornell, NYU (Stern), Columbia, WashU, Georgeton.

**Fingers crossed that these go off well!

Also, what kind of extra-curriculars is NYU Stern looking for?

Also, please note that I got two c+'s Junior year, and a few B's. That is why I am taking summer college level courses, to prove to colleges that I can and will work to succeed.

GPA and grades don’t look impressive, what is your class rank or estimated percentile?

We don’t have rank at my school.

ECs and awards are severely lacking for those elite schools.

Honestly with your sat score I would say you have a good chance at any of those schools. Sure you GPA may not be the most impressive but it’s not bad. A lot of those schools will consider you based on your sat score alone.

Chance me back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1355917-chance-me-tamu-ut-austin-ukmc-rice-utd.html</a></p>

Yes, I do know my G.P.A. will hold me back. After first semester senior year, I’m determined to raise it: UW to a 3.73 from a 3.69, W:to a 4.306 from a 4.26

Would you be able to tell me which of these schools I’d have a good chance for?:)

Like I said you a decent shot at any of those schools. But out of those you probably have a better chance at getting accepted into Georgetown or Wisconsin Madison. Maybe even Cornell. But your chances of getting into the other schools is NOT bad like a 50 50 shot so definitely apply to those as well. Chance me back!

Not to be rude, but you only took BIS, at a community college (not that impressive). Furthermore your grades are not top notch. None of your ECs are good enough (besides science fair) and you don’t have any good awards (besides sci fair). You only took 8 APs and 3 of them are meant to be half year. You have a great SAT I along with good SAT IIs, so i would still apply to all of your schools and hope for the best. I think you would get into stern, due to your good SATs. Don’t forget to use your ED (dont use it on stern, for you are almost guaranteed in).

Kiddo64:
Not rude at all. However, do keep in mind that I took BIS right before my sophomore year, and will be completing 3 more this summer. I would also like to state that while yes it is a community college, my family is not made of money, so I can’t afford to actually take these classes at a top notch college as a high school student. Secondly, the only semester AP class that is stretched to a full year class that I have taken is AP Human Geography (Freshman year). I am also taking a total of 10 AP courses, not 8.

Also, should I send my SAT subject tests to UChicago? They aren’t required, so I don’t want to waste my money…

Pretty amazing stats!! I don’t even think you’re gpa is that huge of a problem for schools like Georgetown, Cornell, etc. But if you can get it up, that would hike up your chances for even more competitive schools! Nice work and impressive EC’s! From them I get the sense that you’re very involved in the arts as well as being academically capable. Good luck! :)

Chance me back please: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1355688-chace-me-brown-cornell-duke-georgetown-upenn-johns-hopkins-yale.html</a></p>

Edit: You really excelled on the subject tests so I would definitely send them! They can only help you

Chicago has EA not ED

Do you have any music (piano or violin) award?

2 C’s and few B’s from junior: BIG RED FLAG

Yale, Standford: Almost no chance unless you have hooks
Brown, Chicago, Columbia, Penn: Very very high reach (GPA and junior year grades)
Georgetown, Cornell, Wash U: High reach (GPA and junior year grades)
Berkeley: reach (GPA and junior year grades)

NYU Stern: Don’t know much about NYU
Wisconsin: I think you are in.

You might have better chances with Wash U ED or Cornell ED.

It’s harsh. But, I am being honest.

Good luck to you!

The UW gpa would be a concern - something that could count you out at a the top choices.

2 C+s and a few B’s in junior year, to be quite honest, is a very poor record to be applying to all the schools you plan to apply to. Solid standardized test scores cannot compensate for such a poor record in the most important year from an academic standpoint. As far as it goes, it looks like none of your choices are safe bets.

pd2013: Thank you for your feedback! I don’t think I’ll be sending them to UChicago for EA, but definitely to all my regular decision schools:) P.S. You’re in anywhere! You’re stats are outstanding! I think you should give MIT a shot too:)

dblazer: Thanks for your feedback:) We’ll wait and see.

20more: For Yale, I was hoping my music supplement would help. I’m not too sure now, would it? As for UChicago, one can never know, as they place a huge emphasis on the essay:) Once again, we’ll have to wait and see, but I do appreciate your feedback.

liszt21. Look, I am not going to second-guess dblazer. He is realistic. He is tough. His motives seem honorable. Your junior year grades are indeed a REAL problem, especially as you have not suggested any mitigating circumstances that can be addressed by your high school counselor or a teacher. So, we shall have to accept those grades for what they are: C’s and B’s. No excuses.

What isn’t being advised is this: you need a revised list of schools! There need to be REAL viable matches and more than one or two safeties (admissions and financial safeties). Your list is predominantly “reach” schools. Even WITH higher grades, such is an unwise application strategy.

I will add one other thing. As a UChicago graduate, I can say that Chicago has had a tradition of being somewhat quirky in its admissions, in that serious interest in and demonstrated fit with the educational mission of Chicago has, previously at least, counted for something. Even if the grades are not the highest. And, true, for UChicago essays matter!!! Therefore, even though Chicago is a reach, you SHOULD apply to at least one dream school. If Chicago is a dream school for you, apply. Apply early. Spend real time getting to know the school and write essays that show not only an intellectual passion, but a sense of “fitness” with Chicago. You could get in. You very well may NOT get in. But, if such IS the case, you’ll have lost nothing but the application fee.

Swingtime: Uchicago is a dream, but I do have hope, and will definitely work super hard on the essay. I feel that I have the SAT score, the rigor of classes, the passion, and I can definitely get excellent recommendations (even an optional, from my Fermilab employer). My sister was in a similar situation as me (12 B’s, 2210 SAT, IMSA graduate, and she will be a Junior at UofC). I agree, I may get in, I may not. But, I will work hard, and my mindset will be that I have a chance, and I will make the most of this chance.

The school’s that I do think I will make are:

 1. UofI
 2. UIC
 3. Wisconsin
 4. Vassar

So, not to worry, I do have fall backs.

Yes, I messed up Junior year, but I’m not making excuses for myself. I made mistakes, I’m moving on by taking a full course load at WCC, a full time job at Fermilab, and an internship at a hospital later this summer. It might not do anything for me, but I’m working and proving to myself that I can achieve anything. Maybe it’ll be UofC, maybe it won’t.

I think you have a good chance at the University of Chicago if you apply Early Action. I think you should send them the SAT IIs, they are very very good. I also think that you should take more community college classes. Do you have an excuse for your grades (ill parent, move, social class fall)? I think you can get in due to your SATs (and your essays and recs).

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1356019-chance-great-business-schools-updated-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

I’m doing my best to take more community college classes:)
Do you think I’d still have a chance if I didn’t send in my SAT IIs? It’s just…money’s a bit tight in my family, so if it’s not necessary, I really don’t want to send them in.

liszt21. I think you have a GREAT attitude. Having a sister at Chicago with similar stats definitely cannot hurt! She’ll also be a great resource for you as you craft your applications. So, yeah, Chicago!!! Go for it.

RE: the SAT IIs. It is a judgment call on your part. Given the grades, it may not hurt to send them in, as kind of an insurance policy. Anything you do that is STELLAR, Chicago SHOULD know about. Were it me, I would send them in to Chicago, required or not because it is just another component to the application that COULD actually help, perception-wise. It would just function as evidence of HOW MUCH you are working toward the goal, kind of above and beyond!!! That CANNOT hurt.

Good luck!!! Dreams do, sometimes, come true. In your case I sincerely wish your UChicago dream does come true. My years there were fantastic and anyone who wants that fantastic opportunity and is willing to work for it, should have it!!!

Swingtime: Thank you:) I really do appreciate your honesty:) I think I’ll send in Chemistry, Math II, and Physics, as I got an A in AP Bio both semesters, yet physics (c+), Bc Calc (c+), and I never took AP Chem. Once again, thank you so much and I really do appreciate you, and everyone being completely honest here!

Oh and by Asian, I mean Indian (Female). Just to clear it up:)
