Chancellor's Scholarship Competition 2013

Dd got her “thanks but no interview” letter snail mail today. Bummed, it would’ve made decisions alot easier.

@amandakayak - sorry about the bad news… where do you live? (just wondering if I might be getting a similar letter in a few days because I am in California). Was there any change to the “pending” status on the website? Resolution one way or the other might help in this process.

My son also got a letter today saying no interview. We’re in Ohio.

Warren, I believe most, if not all, that were invited to apply for Chancellor’s were scholarship recipients, which Pitt states requires 34+ ACT and top 5% rank. I’m sure that the finalists were selected based on their responses to the 3 essays, teacher recommendations, and maybe resume. If you read the Chancellor’s site, you can see what they were looking for…those that are intellectually curious, not just kids with good grades and test scores…so I believe that’s what needs to be conveyed.

crsprnt - NJ. I didn’t show dd the mail yesterday, she is going to be pretty upset. Her status still shows “pending” fwiw.

My daughter just received an invitation via email today to interview… So hope may not be lost in terms of they may still be sending a few invitations…

In order to help current and future users of this thread I am summarizing the timeline of this years notifications. As of 10:00 AM CA time on 2/13/13. If anyone has any additional information - including if they have been notified and how they have been notified - and if they are still waiting – please post.

One of the things I am trying to determine is if the process is rolling (this year). So if you are still waiting please chime in and include your location so I can consider mailing time. Thanks and I hope this post helps others.

My Daughter has not heard yet either way about the interview. We live in CA and have not received todays mail yet.

CC reports 4 interview requests all via email. 3 of these occurred on 2/5/13 (unicameral2013, MommyDearest13, jj1119). The one outlier occurred on 2/12/13 and was an overseas student (ytjkytjk).

CC Reports 2 snail mail no interview decisions both received on 2/11/13. One in OH and one in NJ (amandakayak, ebh87).

At least 2 people have been following this thread and have reported not having heard either way yet.

the status on the website does not seem to change from “in process”

Anyone with additional information please chime in and I will summarize again. Thanks.

I have 2 DDs who have not received any Chancellor’s scholarship response to date in Midwest. Both received full tuition offers in November and applied for Chancellor’s within a couple of weeks. Can someone familiar please summarize the benefits/requirements of the program beyond the scholarship? The girls will travel soon to Alabama for Computer Based Honors interviews and would like to be able to compare to Pitt’s opportunities. From past year’s it appears that there are very few Chancellor’s recipients and the notification of winners is very late, April?

Son received a no notice in Mo on Monday 14 th snail mail

No news today 2/13/13 - Mail has arrived in CA and no news. No email or update to the web status which is still “in process”. There was an additional no interview reported via snail mail that arrived on Monday 2/11? in MO from mominmo for a total of 3. There were also 2 (twins) in the midwest who have still not heard anything (same as me). Please post any other updates. Thanks.

There are traditionally only about 10-12 (one year there was a massive 14, last year 5) Chancellor’s Scholars. I checked through my email and I believe my friend was informed of hers sometime in the last 2 weeks of April. So yes, they do inform the winners pretty late into the process.

Still have not heard either way in NJ.

Mail has arrived in CA and no news today 2/14/13. No email or update to the web status which is still “in process”. Still a total of 3 “no interview” via snail mail. 1 additional person reported yesterday that they are in the same situation as me (not heard either way). Please post any other updates. Thanks.

It will be interesting to watch whether the number of awards go up with the implementation of the Nordenberg scholarships. In theory, it could fund at least 7-10 more, if they are used for Chancellor-type candidates. That’s not clear yet.

Nordenburg scholarships? I’ll have to look that up!

They haven’t said much about it anywhere except that they’ve raised over $5mil for “Nordenberg Scholars” which will be awarded on a merit-based system.

Last year my D got the last wave of the interview in April, we only had ten days to book flight and hotel to go to Pitt; so the invitations are rolling, if you applied, and your status is “progress”, you still have a chance.
Also last year, the campus was under the bomb threat, the unsecured feeling was presence. Our interview location changed twice, we did not know the location until 8:00 in the morning of the interview. The security could be the reason why only five students were named (or accepted) Chancellor Scholars. The students with the caliber of Chancellor Scholars are also in the highly recruit list of many other schools, so they probably went to the others. I am sure more then five scholarships were offered.

Good luck to all!

P1001

So happy to read your response that the interview invites may be rolling. I was under the impression that ALL of the interviews were very late last year. I know that the present honors students at Pitt are invited to be ambassadors to the candidates parents during the student interviews. They are there to answer parent questions and give recommendations etc. I have heard this is a very short window of time that the students need to be available.

So I am wondering if you knew that other students were interviewed in the months before your D or if you were just assuming this was how it was done since hers was so late.

I want you to know that I am not doubting/questioning your credibility. I am rather hoping your response is a positive one that you definitely knew someone who was interviewed at least a few weeks earlier as this will give hope to all of us who are waiting.

thanks for your response

Mail has arrived in CA and no news today 2/15/13. No email or update to the web status which is still “in process”. Still a total of 3 “no interview” via snail mail. Please post any other updates including haven’t heard yet either way (like me). Thanks.

My son was awarded his CS four years ago and it has been an amazing opportunity for him. It’s not just the money, although that freed him up to volunteer instead of work, do research fellowships, take extra classes, etc. The real benefits are the connections and opportunity. My son participated in the Brackenridge fellowships each summer, was a TA, had research fellowships during the fall semesters and enjoyed incredible mentoring. He has been intimately involved in the Honors College and was allowed to take many classes in his major with masters and doctoral students.

I sincerely wish you all the best, I know the wait is awful. But for those of you who are weighing the CS Scholarship against higher ranked schools (my son was torn between the CS and University of Chicago) I will say that if Pitt is any good in your major then taking the scholarship and making the most of the opportunity is a good strategy.
