I’m currently a senior in high school and I wanted to ask regarding what to expect. I was chosen as a finalist for the Chancellor’s Science Scholars Program at UNC-CH and am going to a “Selection Weekend” in the beginning of March in which they will decide who will get in. My question is: What should I expect during this Selection Weekend? How will I prepare? If anyone on is currently in the program, it would be much appreciated if they would give me some insight as to how I should prepare. The link regarding the program can be found here: http://chancellorssciencescholars.web.unc.edu/scholar-experience/
I received the invite too!! but i have no idea what to expect or how to prepare
I received the invite as well! I’m so excited and grateful for this opportunity!
I received the email saying I am a finalist for this program. However, I’m not sure if I will actually be able to attend selection weekend due to flight costs (I am OOS).
To other OOS students who received the invitation: Do you plan on going to selection weekend?
@naicha I’m OOS and got invited too!! I’m definitely going to selection weekend though… already booked plane tix/hotel room! To be fair, I used to live in the area so it’s also like a nice visit to my hometown.
Definitely sounds like a great program, but it’s pretty new (like 3 or 4 years?) so I doubt we can expect much help. I guess you could say I’m “preparing” by doing other college interviews lol.
Anyone know the relationship between CSSP and the Excel/Honors program? Are they affiliated in some way? I couldn’t really find much info. I was also wondering how many finalists there are in total… I think only 30-40 end up accepted!
Anyway, hope to see you guys there!! I’m sure it’ll be fun despite the stress.
Wait also @color300 you probably already saw this but it was sorta helpful:

^ @naicha maybe you would want to try contacting the recruitment coordinator they listed?
I am a finalist at well, does anyone know how many finalists there are? And how many will receive the scholarship?
I’m guessing you guys are all EA? They wouldn’t have released CSS for RD yet, correct?
Hi ya’ll,
@ChristophWaltz @lilypad73 @nici288 @naicha @sydneympm @UNC2020AAmerican @color300
Sorry for the delay, my name is Warner and I am the Recruitment Coordinator for the Chancellor’s Science Scholars.
I just wanted to provide some clarifying information about Selection Weekend and the program. Please message if you do have any further questions.
- Selection Weekend will begin Friday, March 4th at 5 p.m. with a Welcome Dinner. Saturday, March 5th students will begin the interview process, a 30-minute interview for our faculty and staff members to learn more about you and why you believe you would be a good fit for the program. During the day you will also participate in a lab tour and discussion panel. Below is a link to get a better idea of exact timings for Saturday.
http://admissions.unc.edu/files/2016/02/Selectionweekendagenda2016.pdf
- Our selection weekend will consist of about 80 finalist, with an additional 10-15 interviewing at other times due to conflicts. Our goal is to select a cohort of about 35-40 Chancellor's Science Scholars for the 4th cohort of students. PLEASE BE SURE TO REGISTER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! (you may due this through the original email invitation you received)
- If you are unable to make the weekend due to extenuating circumstances please contact me using the email in the link below. Please know that this will in no way alter your chances of being selected for the program. http://admissions.unc.edu/selectionweekend/chancellors-science-scholars-selection-weekend-faqs/
- We are still reviewing candidates from the Regular Decision deadline to be selected as finalists.
I hope this information is helpful, please continue to post if you have more questions.
Hi @CSS_Warner ! I have two quick questions. Firstly, the invitation I received in the mail for CSS weekend invited parents to come as well, but the email did not specify this. Do most finalists bring their families or do they come alone? Secondly, am I correct in assuming that UNC is not providing accommodations for Friday night for the scholars?
anyone else getting SUPER nervous for results to cone out? My anxiety is through the roof
@lilypad73 Yes! It is such a great program. Hoping my son hears some good news soon. Good luck to you as well!
@lilypad73 I am still nervous for results too! They said it would be within a couple weeks though so can’t be too long now.
Anyone else just get a survey asking about the selection weekend?
Yes my son and I each got one.
@CSS_Warner do you know an estimate of when we should hear back from the program?
I got an email today from the program saying results should be out early next week.
Same
Hi @lilypad73! Students should be notified of there decisions sometime this week. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Is there a certain time of day that we will be hearing back this week? @CSS_Warner
