I am a parent whose daughter got accepted to the Research Scholars Program at Chapel Hill. Is there anyone who is in the program an what are your experiences and thought? Thanks in advance.
I tried to get info about this program at the Admitted Student days this past weekend, and literally I received blank stares from every single person I asked.

Just thought I’d give this a bump. DS, recieved the same offer.
Anyone know if Honors Carolina and Scholars have to be mutually exclusive?
@Essel They are not. If you are a scholar, you are automatically given an honors Carolina invite
@Pastpower - Pretty sure that’s not the case- One of my son’s friends was invited to be a research scholar, but was not offered Honors, even after he applied for reconsideration. I just wondered if you had to give up one of the two.
@Essel same here. My son was offered Research Scholar, but not honors…he would have preferred honors
@Essel Oh I was mistaken I thought you meant the general scholars program at UNC. Those who are UNC Scholars automatically get an invite.
@ParentOf2022 - I know we’ll find out over the weekend, but I wonder what the Honors program entails. We’ve seen the list of courses and seminars, we know they have priority registration, but DS really wants to do both, and I’m hoping they’ll let him What research is your son looking at?
@Essel I don’t know! LOL!!! Honestly I don’t understand 90% of what he’s doing in his classes. Makes me feel incredibly dumb and old at the same time. For the Research Scholars, it appears as though he would work on it during summer sophmore year. We haven’t gotten a whole lot of information about it. Hopefully, we’ll find out more on Sunday.
@ParentOf2022 - You’re headed to UNC on Sunday? So are we!!
@Essel we are! Hoping to get more information on Computer Science. My son really wants UNC to be his top choice, but he’s leaning heavily towards NC State. Unless a last minute scholarship comes through for one, the cost is about the same. Just seems as though State has a better program for Computer Science. We may be wrong…either school I believe will give him a strong education. I really don’t believe he can make a wrong choice. I’ve done my best to help him gather information and will continue to look for more until he makes his choice (little confused on CODA at State). The choice has to be his. Both offer a 5 year Masters Plan which is wonderful
@ParentOf2022 , We drove up last night, and had a most delightful evening on Franklin Street! One of my sons’ friends who’s at CH showed up, gave us lots of info! Get a cookie at Insomnia, if you like those! Not that it’s a factor, they have them at State, too!
@Essel we left a bit later than we meant to (alarms set for Saturday instead of Sunday morning) we got our welcome package and were seated a few minutes before they began.
Still no more info on Research Grant. Will need to call.
@ParentOf2022 - They had some in the Honors reception- basically, you take a course in your freshman year, are given opportunities depending on your field of interest, will receive guidance from your counselor and an older peer, almost always will receive a grant, especially if there’s travel involved. The orientation will be your first interaction with the counselor, she stressed that that was a big thing, even if you are entitled to priority registration.
No one can give us an answer too. I did find out that CSRP and Honors Carolina is separate. One of the professors said it is one of many research programs. Priority registration for classes is not given unless you are Honors Carolina.
A lot of what we are told about the research grant that was offered is we’ll learn more later! LOL!!! Not so sure about the guidance and knowledge of some of the staff. For instance in the same conversation with scholarship office, they changed their stance no less than 7 times (stopped counting at 7) on if my son was or was not recieving a scholarship…they left it at he would if he enrolled. I’m pretty sure that he would not, but got tired of questioning them. Anyhow, the Research grant is not a deciding factor for my son. He’s more concerned with the CS program and if it is the right fit for him.
We are in the same boat. My daughter is interested in the biological sciences and although Carolina has a great program, State does too. I called the office today and talked to someone in the admissions and they did not have enough information and said they would call me back.
