chances, amherst

i posted earlier about other selective schools but since then ive read up on amherst and think it would be a good fit for me. i plan to do early decesion, but dont know how selective they are and am wondering what my chances are.

ive taken
4 years of h/ap english and i got a 5 on the ap test
2 years of history with a 4 on the ap u.s. history test
3 years of other social sciences
3 years of science with two h, one at the college
3 years of spanish
3 years of art two ap
4 years of math with ap calc b.c. this year

i did a summer program at the the school of the art institute of chicago for three weeks this summer for painting and drawing and i plan to add a visual arts supplement to my application with slides

im also president of NAHS this year (national art honors society) and have done a lot of school community service with it (painted a track mural, ect) and am in NHS and CSF and have done school commuity serive in non-art fields as well. as president this year im organizing a lot of art events at school (arts fair for elementary school kids, ect.)

my g.p.a unweighted is 3.8 and weighted 4.5 with a class rank of either 12/ 434 or 1/434

however, my sat scores have not been great.
i got a 620 on the verbal and math sections and only a 570 in math.
on the sat IIs i got a 700 in u.s. history and a 680 in english literature, with a 570 in math two and im going to take the sat's again in october

im also an equestrian and have been riding competively all throughout highschool and am doing community service with a organization working with solar energy

im at the top of my class with a weighted g.p.a but my sat's arent great and i dont have tons of community service. hopefully the sat's improve when i take them again, and that early decesion helps my chances.

you have to boost those SATs then you should be fine.

I don't see Amherst. Both SAT I and IIs are not in range and the ECs aren't Amherst calibre. The class is so small, everyone has something that really stands out.

I'm sorry that this isn't helpful- i know next-to-nothing about Amherst.

But i took a class at the SAIC this summer, too! For writing, though. i thought it was an amazing experience- How did you feel about them?

i also thought it was a great experience. different than what i expected though, for painting i wanted techincal experience but that wasnt emphazied nearly as much as the conceptual work. did you stay in the dorms? (i thought they were really nice)

No, i just did the two-week program, and i live about a half-hour away, so i just took the train.

What building were they in?

And i agree... this was my first time being formally schooled in writing, and i thought we'd learn like- lit. devices and writing methods, but it was a lot of peer editing and advice on certain work...we didn't really get much work done...but it was still amazing.

i stayed in the chicago building and my classes were in the columbus drive building. i dont think id want to go there though because it didnt have much of a campus and since it was in the business district everything closed by 6

Amherst might be out of your range. Still apply, but know that most of the people who apply have rockin' good SATs on top of a GPA and EC list like yours.

You'll need to seriously raise the SAT. If you like Amherst, I suggest applying to the SAT optional LACs for RD such as Middlebury and Bowdoin. My bet is you;ll get into those, but with the current scores Amherst is out of range.

Agreed. Your SATs are not Amherst calibre and applying there would probably be a waste of your time and money...But if art's really your thing, why not Rhode Island School of Design? RISD is probably the top art school in the country and they're mainly concerned about your portfolio and much less concerned about your SAT scores. Also, you should take a look at Hampshire College. It's one of the five colleges in or near Amherst, MA, it's pretty artsy, and you can take courses at Amherst College.
