Hi, first post here. I'm finishing up a transfer degree at Shoreline CC, with an emphasis on Computer Science. My GPA is currently 3.73, I'm a 17 year old white male, and I've been taking pretty hard courses (although I'm not sure if that matters). I did poorly in a recent Calculus class (C-range) that will be in the last quarter listed on the transcript. I may decide to retake that Calc class, which would conceivably bump me up to about a 3.88. No SAT, not that they want it for the application.

I'm wondering, what are my odds of getting into UW? Secondly, what are my odds of getting into the CS program there? From what I've heard it's extremely competitive.

There should be an advisor at Shoreline who specializes in CS. My D is in a similar situation, but at Bellevue College. The advisor was very knowledgeable and yes, the CS program is extremely competitive.

My advisor at Shoreline was completely useless. As I remember, CS department at Shoreline was also cut significantly…

@jlee27 - I think you have good chances of getting into the university itself. I’m not really sure about CS, but all I know is that it is VERY competitive. It has been discussed numerous times on this forum. Try searching - in particular, pay attention to posts by speedsolver,

I think you’ll be able to get into UW fine. CS however, is a different beast. It’s already really difficult for regular students to get in, and for transfers it’s even more so. I remember one quarter (I don’t remember if it was autumn or spring quarter) a CSE advisor told me that the transfers who were accepted into CS for that quarter had to pretty much get a 3.9+. I don’t know how the other quarters treated transfers, but I’d imagine that it isn’t too different (it’d be nice if someone could provide some concrete stats though). That C in your Calculus class is going to make an impact unfortunately. Best of luck though!

And yeah Speedsolver’s provided some really good information regarding CSE on here.
