Hi,

I'm planning to transfer to the UW for Winter Quarter 2013, for which the deadline is due September 1. I'm going to be transferring with about 60 credits from an in-state college, not a community college, and I want to major in CSE. My transfer GPA is 3.8-3.87 (depending on how I do this quarter but it's going to be around that range). I've taken courses relating to the major (Calculus 1, 2, 3) and the intro programming classes (level 1 and 2) that are supposed to be equivalent to both CSE 142 and 143. I've had an average of 3.8 in my math classes and 4.0 in my programming ones.

I'm not quite sure if my credit is going to transfer and if I will be accepted. With my GPA, will I have a good chance in the admission process? Who can I contact regarding transfer credit and appeals to transfer credit? Would it be better for me to contact a CSE adviser directly or the general UW advisers?

I'm simply looking for straight answers. I have been rejected from the UW for my freshman year application but I came back with much stronger stats. Simply put, do I have a good chance?

Pretty impressive. I don’t have anything particular to add to this as far as expertise, but I do know that your GPA will be higher than the other people who did their UG entirely at UW when it comes time to apply to the CSE. That’s simply because the Calc sequence here is curved between 2.5 and 3.0, so someone (no names mentioned) who was the person breaking the curve in their Calculus class could be tearing his hair out wondering why he only got a 3.7 in the class, meanwhile his friend who is bloody brilliant is getting 3.1-3.3 through the entire sequence.

That said, if the course evaluation catalogue says that the courses are equivalent to the intro CSE classes, then they are definitely equivalent to them and they will transfer properly.

What school are you transferring from? Would it make sense to save $$ and also increase your chances of admission by going to the local CC and then trying again for, say, Summer Quarter 2012, in case you’re not in for Winter?

BTW, one of my buddies I’ve made here got in with much lower stats than mine (and yours) for the Winter 2012, but he did it with an AAS-DTA from a CC.

Your grades are competitive for CSE. Talk to the CSE advisers directly about transfer credits (you should be able to transfer quite a bit, well, depending on what you took) and transfer admissions. Your CSE 142/143 equivalents should transfer though, as probably should your calc credits. Anything that is “equivalent” to any of the UW courses should transfer.

Edit: That being said, great grades, but write a fantastic personal statement to finish up your application!
