Chances as a mathematician at RSI and colleges

<p>Hey, I'm bisbis12's twin brother, and I'd like feedback on my chances at RSI this summer (I'm an Asian junior). Looking further down the road, what are my chances at Michigan, MIT, Harvard, Virginia Tech, and Caltech?
I'm from a okay school in Michigan and my intended major is mathematics. Here are my stats: </p>

<p>PSAT: 80M, 59W, 55CR
Old SAT: 800 Math, 590 Verbal
GPA: 3.9 unweighted, 4.1 weighted
Rank: 25? out of 300?</p>

<p>9th Grade:
Honors Analysis (Precalc): A/A
Honors English: B/ B+
Computer Programming: A/A
Gym: A/A
Integrated Biology/ Physical Science (double period): A/A</p>

<p>10th Grade:
Calculus BC AP: A/A
Physics: A/A
Adv. Biology: A/A
US History: A/A-
Honors English: A/B+
Statistics AP: A/A</p>

<p>11th Grade- so far:
Physics AP: A
Biology AP: A-
Regular English 11: A
Chemistry: A
Multivariable Calc (half-year class at Wayne State Univ): A-
Linear Algebra (half-year class at Wayne State Univ): have not taken, will probably get an A-/A</p>

- Calculus BC AP (4),m class was doing AB, but school signed everyone up for BC accidentally. Grrrrr.

<p>I have done no research and don't think I will be able to.</p>

<p>Activities (limited) by end of high school:
- JV Tennis (9-10), trying out again this year, possibly up to the 12th
- Math club (9-12)
- National Honor Society (10-12)
- Qualified for AIME.
- Got to Part II on Michigan Math Prize Competition
- Qualified for State Geography Bee 8th Grade</p>

<p>So what are my chances? I'm counting on my math skills to make up for my verbals.</p>

<p>math can never make up for verbal or vice versa. They stand alone pretty much and you need to be strong in both. Why is your verbal so weak? Is english not your first language (it wasn't mine either)? </p>

<p>Sadly enough, you need to show yourself proficient in the humanities as well as math and science. Every asian you pick off the streets is kick ass in math and science, what sets YOU apart from all those others (applying to the same schools as you are)?</p>

<p>Wow, then you have been in the country longer than I have. You definitely need to get that verbal SAT score up then.</p>

<p>i have poor SAT too, but I make up for it in other areas. 1290 is not so different from 1310. 2 out of 75 rickoids got SAT lower than 1400, but we did other things that other rickoids haven't done. Every other rickoids have perfect SAT/PSAT scores. We excelled in our areas. Other rickoids got in for different reasons: 13 APs by their jr yr, 135K for a project at INTEL, US and international bio/chem/physics/math winners, participants, and qualifiers, etc. </p>

<p>you need to do the same if you want to do RSI. AIME qualifier doesn't say much. Anyone that can get above 100 for the AMC can qualify for AIME. There's not a lot of volume. I can't authoritatively speak for colleges because I'm still going through the process, but I can tell you that with stats like that for RSI, I don't think you'll make it.</p>

<p>this year, there's an applicant who has taken all of these courses by the time he applies for RSI. Granted he's from Canada and the application process is different than US, but still, this is the caliber you are competing against for a spot:</p>

<p>Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Number Theory, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Point-Set Topology, Differential Equations, Partial-Differential Equations, Modern Physics, Quantum Mechanics.</p>

<p>Thanks, staticsoliloy. How much math courses do the average math focused acceptee take? Also, anyone else have any college advice?</p>

<p>When I was accepted into the RSI program in 2003, I beleive the average score on the PSAT was a 235. I scored a 230, but I was closely affiliated to an MIT honors program for high school freshmen-seniors.</p>

<p>More stuff: I'm Indian, not Chinese, as some of you may have thought me to be. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell everyone: 800 on Math IIC SATII, and 750 on Physics SAT II.
I'm also pretty sure I can raise my verbal to 650 with studying (I'll memorize those pesky vocab words) by December to a total SAT of 1450. Also, I'll be taking Light/Heat from EPGY by myself in the first semester of my senior year. How much will these new pieces of info help while applying to top colleges? Remember, this is also a what are my college chances thread, too! I need chances in percent for these colleges, please: Michigan, MIT, Harvard, Virginia Tech, and Caltech.</p>
