Chances at Arts and Sciences

OK, I am ED'ing to Cornell Arts and Sciences with a planned major in English...what do you think my chances are?

I am Cuban and speak spanish fluently

SAT: 800 on verbal, 690 on math, 680 on writing...new SAT 1 scores come out monday and I think I improved both writing and math...

SAT 2's: 790 on World History, 750 on Lit, 690 on Math 1 (ew)

GPA: This is the complicated part...freshmen and sophomore year I went to one of the top prep schools in the nation and got mediocre grades (all B's pretty much). Then, after sophomore year my father had a drug problem (which makes up my personal statement), we ran out of money and I switched to public school. (#53 public school in nation according to Newsweek). My first year there I pulled a 4.8 GPA, and this year I am pulling somewhere around a 5.5. I am also in Multivariable Calculus and Differential equations, which is a special course only offered at my school. It is dual enrollment with FIU, and 2 AP credits... I think that should look pretty good. One problem with my grades Junior and Senior year is that Junior year I had a BRUTAL english teacher and I got a C in that class...this really clashes with my 800 verbal score and my planned English major. To counter this, I am having my current english teacher write one of my reccomendations... I have a high A in that class so hopefully that helps.

Courseload: Last year 3 APS and 2 Honors, this year 6 AP credits and an honors credit...before that at my prep school it was all unweighted...which just kills my classrank...I think I can have my class rank nullified though. (It would be top 10 with just my junior+senior years but with freshman+sophomore years I am ranked like 70th percentile.

Essays: I think they are overall pretty solid, and my personal statement about my dad's alcohol and cocaine addiction should help (i think).

EC: Full time work experience, habitat for humanity, and carribean heart menders...this can be beefed up of course...

What do you guys think about my chances?

I'd say you've got a very good shot, particularly with ED

I'm kind of worried because my guidence counselor has no idea. The change in school has made my class rank invalid.I'd hate to apply ed to a school where I have no chance

dude ur a URM and u have an 800 on verbal, pretty spectacular. I would vote ur in.

bump............

one more bump...

I think the work experience will really help. Have you won any awards or gone to any competitions?

I agree with bball87.
lucky xP
i'm in multi too! isn't vector-valued equations and mathematica and all that good stuff fun? -_-;;

btw I'm in Miami, and I just sent all my stuff out before we got hit by Wilma...

My mom's office just got power back so I'm writing this from there. One problem: I doubt that my school report and one of my teacher rec's has been sent, and probably won't get sent for a while now. ..like it said in the other thread though, I'll just call Cornell up and explain.

Also, my new SAT's came in.

I got an 800 on Verbal (again), 720 on math and 710 on writing...do you think the repeat 800 on verbal will help me out a lot?

Thistlepanger--yeah that stuff is crazy....pretty interesting. Were doing partial derivatives and the multi-variable chain rule now.

Well I just got my power back after the storm. Do you guys think that Wilma might actually help out the applicants from Miami this year?

I hear the national news coverage was very...catastrophic.
