Chances at Brown PLME

Hi everyone,
I already posted this in the chances section, but since I wasn’t getting many responses, I figured I’d post it in the Brown section. I’m from Omaha, NE and go to the largest school in it. I was a sophomore this year, so going to be Junior next year, and I want to go into Medicine in college. I’m looking at the Brown PLME for college. Also, my father attended Brown, as well as my sister.

Thanks for helping!

Just boost up those SAT’s and you stand a very good chance.

Yeah, and I’m also going to take the SAT II’s. I was under the impression that I didn’t stand much of a chance, because I was told that most people who get in have done incredible things like being a semifinalist at Intel STS or Siemens…do you agree?

Getting into PLME is probably just as hard as getting into Harvard or Yale. That being said, if you were about to boost your SAT’s up to a 2350 or so and have SAT II’s with similar numbers, then you kind of do become one of those incredible people. It seems like you’ve done a lot, and being the valedictorian of a very large class helps, too.

People who get into PLME are mortals: I’m friends through association with one from my state, and met one during ADOCH (Brown visit for admits). But yes, typically people do soemthing to stand out. But you have: the GYAP is pretty prestigious (I know someone from my state who has done something similar, and they got all kinds of scholarships and awards because of their involvement with that and other government/community related things). Give it a try, and if you like Brown pre-med anyways be sure to check the box saying you’d like to be considered for Brown even if you can’t get into PLME, and you’ve got a decent chance.

However, don’t be stressing too much about college yet. You may find that junior year, you get shaken and tossed and wind up 10th or 15th in your class after a few rough semesters. Here’s my advice from the other side: go through that year, give all your classes 100% (NOT 110%. That’s too much and depriving oyu of too much fo a life outside of shcool), and you’ll find out where the chips fall. Then, you give college admissions your best shot, and make sure you have matches plus a safety or two in addition to the reach of Brown and the higher-reach of PLME, and you’ll find someplace to be happy at. Even if you start, for the firs ttime in your life, really getting Bs. Remember, all a B means (so long as you give it your all) is that you’re in a class that’s at your pace and difficulty.

I was just wondering what my chances of getting accepted were. Here are my stats
GPA- 4.45 weighted
Class Rank- 6 of 898
ACT-36
SAT II’s
Math II-800
Chemistry-800
AP’s
Chemisty-5
Calc BC-5
European History- 5
US History- 4
English Language- 4
Extracurriculars- 150+ volunteer hours at library, hospital, chinese school, and nursing home. Varsity Tennis. IMEA participant.

I think that your scores are very good, esp. the 36 act, but your EC’s don’t really show anything about you, no passion.

chemwz, volunteering at hospice is amazing. And then to shadow a dermatologist. Almost opposite perspectives from each other. Great experiences!
