Now here's what I think will be my downfall.
GPA: 3.3
Math score on SAT: 590 (making my CR+M score a 1280 which kind of sucks.

What do you think my chances for BU are? My brother is a graduate of the university so I think that helps. And what are some schools that have similar requirements to BU in the northeastern part of the country? (Planning on studying biology or something of that nature)

I appreciate the harshness. This is one of those things where it’s needed to be honest. I’m not gonna get my hopes up and then be disappointed. I’d rather be happily surprised than disappointed. Also, are there any schools I should think about applying to that would be less of a reach but also a good establishment? I generally want to go to a city school. @TomSrOfBoston @paul2752

the CUNY systems are quite good, you can get into just about any of them. IF you want to study science, may I recommend Stony brook? Its not urban, but it is (in my humble opinion) the best public school in the state. You cant really go wrong with stony.
as for BU, I wouldnt stress. Just apply and good luck, you have as decent a shot as any
;D
@ggwpafk823 Yeah I’m applying to Stony Brook, Macaulay Honors for CUNY, Fordham, and NYU as well. I understand that BU is probably in the reach category with NYU and Macaulay Honors but I’ll give it a shot.
Good stats. Your GPA is mediocre. I heard Macaulay wants a 1200 minimum for math and CR so you may have a shot there. I applied but my SAT scores were terrible. I’m retaking in a few weeks. You have a lot of leadership roles. That’s always great. How were your essays?
@ggwpafk823 I know Macaulay says they want a 1350+ in the SAT but I’ve seen/heard a few people get in with 1250s or so. I think you have a great chance assuming your GPA matches your SAT score.
@brianamjk I think my essays were decent. One of them definitely better than the other though. And I heard it really decreases my chances if many students from my school are applying to Macaulay. Is that true?
@ggwpafk823 I think you def have chances. I know someone who got in with like a 1400 or something on just CR and Math. Did you take any college now courses? I hear that boosts yours chances a lot. It shows interest in the CUNY system. @adam9697 I heard the same thing actually. Small schools are beneficial because you can get a higher rank easily. (I’m 4 going to 2). BUT there are less APs. Colleges like AP’s clearly. And with small schools, it’s a lot easier to get in to programs if you’re one of few applying. That’s why all the schools I applied to except for two are reach schools.
To answer your question Adam, I think it’s not going to be easy if you have a lot of applicants from your school.
I hear Macaualy is binding! Is this true? It’s an amazing opportunity but I feel if I can get in to Macaulay I can get in to NYU…
@brianamjk woah I’ve never heard anything about Macaulay being binding. I’m 99% sure it isn’t. And I do come from a small school with about 50 kids in the graduating class but it’s also filled with very bright kids (most of whom are applying to Macaulay) so I think that really screws me. And I’ve taken as many APs as possible but it’s really not much (5). Man I just want to get my acceptance/rejection letter already. Do you recommend any other schools that would match me that would be around the NYC area?
Your GPA is low so that is a concern, but your SATs wouldn’t be a dealbreaker. I knew a lot of kids (myself included) with SATs in the 1200 range–some in CGS, some in the “regular” colleges. My roommate freshman year was definitely helped by her sister having graduated recently–she was NOT a perfect high school student, GPA-wise, so BU might seriously take your brother into consideration.
If your essays are good enough, it could edge in your favor. You have a shot. (I’m happy to read your essays if you want a more informed opinion)
@adamd9697 its a bit too late to think about new colleges isnt it? Did you apply to cooper/fordam/st johns? If you have 1450, you can get some decent aid.
Stony brook is still open though, and its not very competitive, everyone has a chance. Plus, if your in the 10%, you can get free tuition via the STEM incentive program.
@ggwpafk823 I’ve already applied to Fordham and stony brook. I was thinking about applying to the St Johns PA program but I’m unsure what my chances are for it. I may just apply either way because I’m very interested in becoming a PA. I started another thread asking what my chances would be but I’ve received no replies yet. Do you have any idea what my chances would be for a program like that?
i love like a block away from st johns lol, so even though I havent looked into it as a potential match ( i dont want to live that close to home), this is the general vibe I get:
its denitely not uber-competitive, so I suggest you apply, esp if you want to do PA and like the school, everyone has a chance
but I wouldnt exactly expect aid in any form fro sju, they rely alot on gpa, sat for stuff like that
@Adamd9697 That’s what someone in my sociology class told me. What about NYU Poly? Or actually cooper Union? I applied to cooper then when I got emailed a list of things I have to do before the deadline I figured it’s a waste. I want to study history. I shouldn’t force myself in to engineering. Also maybe Fordham? Rose Hill is supposed to be the bigger large school vibe and Lincoln is smaller and intimate from what I have heard. LIU? Maybe as a safety?
