Chances at Business Schools

Well, I know I seem very optimistic about getting into top-notch business schools, but there's no other place I rather go to..

Race- South Asian

My SATS are:

C.R.- 570...I totally messed up one section and screwed up big time :( (Although I took the SATs this October and am expecting a 650-700)

Math- 750 (Probably got 770 this time)

Writing- 680 (Probably 720 this time)

ACT- Haven't taken it yet, taking it this month. (I'll probably get around a 34-35 this time around)

MY GPA: 88.88 GPA Weighted...(3.6?) The only reason my GPA is so low is because I attend a specialized H.S. in NYC, which has a huge workload...it's ranked #3 in NYC...so hopefully that helps..

Class Rank- 46/92 Students (Our school does not report ranks since our GPA's are very close and since we lack a large student body.)

E.C.s- My E.C.s are decent.

3-4 Science Exhibitions...Two time Nominations..etc..

1 Math Exhibition..My Research Paper was accepted.

50+ Volunteer hours at the Cardiology Center near my area.

2 Charity Walks

2 Years of Tennis Team

3 Years of Chess Club

2 Years of Model UN

Won 2 Essay Contests

Helped many poor children in foreign countries with charity and certain organizations.

There are a few more that don't come to mind, but these are basically the "creme" of the crop as you say.

My List of Business Schools:

U Penn Wharton (Seems Impossible)

NYU Stern

UC Berkeley

U of Chicago (Definitely not getting in)

Washington U. in St. Louis (Clin)

Cornell U

Carnegie Mellon

I have a few others, but these are the main ones I'm hoping for..

My SAT score is 1990, it will probably rise to a 2050-2150 after I get my October results..so that should be covered.

My GPA is a little poor, but is reasonable considering the difficulty of my school; I should be able to raise it to a 3.7 by Mid-year.

My E.C.s are decent, but I was wondering what I should do to make them look outstanding (e.g. join any events during this time etc..)

Everyone in my school who is above me as far as SAT's/GPA/E.C.'s etc are concerned.. isn't aiming for business schools, rather medical schools such as Sophie Davis, John Hopkins..etc. So I don't have any competition in my school as far as the schools I'm applying to are concerned.

So I was wondering what I should do to gain entrance into these schools. Should I E.D. one of them (money isn't a problem)? What should I do to improve my chances. How are my chances? Most importantly, what other business schools fit my category?

Thanks

Bump.......

Well, thanks for chancing me. I'm not sure how much help i can be but ill try.

If you do get a 34 or 35 on the ACT, i think you'll have an excellent shot at some of those schools. But a 35 is extreamely hard to get. And the ACT is pretty different from the SAT, you really can't predict your score based on your score for the other exam. And from what i here ED can help a lot at some schools, and almost none at others. You should do some research into acceptance levels for ED vs RD at each school, but don't apply ED to a school that's not your top choice. Well, good luck, im sorry i couldn't be of more help.

that's great advice thanks.

open to more advice/remarks.

U Penn Wharton - major major major reach

NYU Stern - reach

UC Berkeley - reach

U of Chicago- reach

Washington U. in St. Louis - slight reach

Cornell U - reach

Carnegie Mellon - slight reach

i know wharton's a huge reach lol

Upenn Wharton: extremely extremely high reach

NYU Stern: low reach, high match

UC Berkeley: not familiar with any of the UC's, sorry

U of Chicago: i don't really know how their business school is

Washington U. in St. Louis (Clin): high match, low reach

Cornell U: reach

Carnegie Mellon: high match

unfortunately, i feel like your chances at most of these schools aren't particularly great. your SATs and GPA are average at best, and your only 50th percentile in your class (but you said your school is hard, so i dunno...). your EC's don't really stand out to me either; you don't have any leadership positions and they don't really demonstrate that you have a passion for business.

but, i'll be glad to see you prove me wrong :)

well i dont know of any leadership positions that epitomize a passion for business, but i deal with my own portfolio that consists of various stocks and i do hold a vast knowledge of the business world, however, im unsure if that would add any light to my app.

Also, I have 3 years of Math Team- Captain this year possibly, don't know if that demonstrates any leadership...and also Science Olympiad President..?

Your best bet for one of the schools on your list will be to transfer into one as a junior. I've seen people transfer into Berkeley and Michigan most easily as their business programs start in junior year.

Your class rank or SAT scores alone will keep you out of most of these programs right now.

well my sats are probably gonna be around 2150 this time around...and my ACTs 35-36, because i've been taking practice tests and i do much better on the ACT than i do on the SAT..

Chicago doesn't have a business school.

88.8 avg is bad... I think your from BTHS?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but an 88 isn't a 3.6. I think it's a 3.3.

I'm guessing either Stuvy or Brooklyn Tech?

just wondering if some one can guide me through the posting thread process..how do i post on this??? i need to ask an important question regarding CPA examinations and accounting...
any help is appreciated!

mjazz, post on the grad school board. You could also try the MBA or Investment banking boards as people into business post in those.

On the OP front, I've hired kids out of all the schools you name for years. We see their transcripts, often have SAT and GMAT scores and know where they rank. It's unusual to see a Wharton candidate with lower than a 2250 SAT score. The ones that are lower were also quarterback of their college team or bring other needed perspectives.

Stern candidates do have lower scores on average, but the really competitive candidates have high scores and very high GPAs.

To be upfront about leadership, captain of a typical high school club is not what you'll see at Wharton or Stern. This is a competitive crowd. They are fighting it out for leadership positions in age appropriate national organizations since they were in middle school. Honestly, these kids scared my own children while in middle school because their drive was so developed at a young age.

While Stern has lower average stats it attracts many kids who could go anywhere but the location allows them to advance their careers in additional ways. Penn isn't too far from NYC for Ivanka Trump to remain in the NYC social scene while earning top grades at Wharton, but many of her social peers choose Stern.

-Well Chicago U has an amazing grad business school...starting there wouldn't be a bad idea..

-QHSSYC, we overtook Brooklyn Tech 2 years ago.

-An 88.88 average translates into a 3.6 GPA (as per my guidance counselors) and collegeboard.com

So, what should I do to make myself stand out...I basically want to go to any top notch business school, Wharton's definitely an over-reach, I'm basically aiming for Stern or Berkeley..

Bumpp...
...

Since you're out of state, UC Berkeley would be a reach for you ...
Even if you were in-state, a 3.6 weighted isn't going to cut it for UCB

yea, their out of state acceptance rate is a killer.
