Chances at Cornell, Lehigh, others?

I'm applying to: Cornell, Lehigh, Binghamton, Delaware, Albany, and The College of New Jersey

SATs:
1390 (700V/690M)
710 - Chem
650 - Math IIC
610 - Writing

GPA: 4.118 (top 10%, ranked 27/337)
AP's (junior and senior yr): APUSH, APEuro, AP Lit, AP Spanish, AP Calc AB, AP Chem, AP Art History

EC's: 4 years chorus, Select choir, area-all-state, 4 years in musical. All honor societies
Jobs: 3 years at a camp for gifted children
Special note: I'm half deaf, and used this story in my essays for Cornell, Lehigh, Bing, and Delaware.

What are my chances, especially at the privates?? And do you think I'll get good money from em??

Cornell maybe, the rest 100% in. Why such a gap between your reach (cornell) and safeties (the rest). I would apply to some matches like Carnegie Mellon, Emory, etc.

What do you want to major in?

A big gap because of my family's financial situation. Albany is a super-safety (i would never go unless the unlikely rejection from all other schools). I also don't want to go too far from home (i live on the border of NY and NJ) so Carnegie Mellon (about 8 hours away) is way to far, as is Emory.

mdhopeful: Mathematics (some of the schools I applied for Math education...cus they had it)

Just wanted to know so I could maybe reccomend some other more "match-y" schools.

What would you recommend then, and what are my chances at the schools I've already applied to?

I think your chances are good. You're a midrange applicant for Lehigh, and an above avg for Albany and TCNJ.. Bing and Delaware, are probably somewhere in the middle, with Cornell being a bit of a reach. The University of Rochester came into my mind first, but I don't know if their math program is that great.

There are a lot of exciting things going on at RPI.

They are fairly liberal with Merit Aid (a Renssselaer Medal winner gets $15,000 per Year for 4 or 5 years.) 26% of the Class entering in the Fall of 2004 were medal winners.

Good Luck in your College Search

bump...some more opinions on my chances at the schools i applied to would be much appreciated

You have a great chance in all three, i'd say. I think your GPA and scores def. meet up to Cornell's standards. The other five are def. looking good for you.

I have also been partially-deaf since birth and wear two hearing aids. I don't exactly know how let adcoms be aware of my situation. Also for your essay, how did you incoprate it??

what the... i have a hearing loss too. I've had like a 50-70db loss since birth, but in the last year one hear has gone to 110db loss... i wwaass hoping my esssays were gonna be really unique--I applied ED to cornell

vinzzy: i incorporated it by discussing my condition (congenital cholestiatoma), and basically saying how I overcame it and succeded.

BTW: Just checked, I got in EA to Binghamton :)

Well, web, my college counselor sense is giving me a no for many of those colleges. Looks like you might have to settle for Albany after all. Also, your one EC is weak. In a recent study of Northeastern colleges, 86% of colleges said the highest rated EC is Academic Challenge Teams, and a stunning 24% said Choir is the lowest ranked. Beef up your EC's and you might find yourself at Syracuse, but that is still a big time reach. Your major lacks the grades, especially with that 610 SAT II looming over. And about that special note? I'm sorry to hear you are half deaf, but I'm not sure how big that will play with the colleges. I mean, you still can hear right? My suggestion: If you are ethnic, play that card. The colleges just love that kind of stuff, and it gets them a diverse status. Other than that, say hello to the fresh air of the capitol of NY. You'll love it there. But then again, what do I know?

Velocity
Cornell Graduate

Exactly, what do you know, velocity56?

He has a shot at Cornell, and the rest of his schools are fine. He can make Syracuse as well. Not every school requires 20 ECs.

Try applying to RPI.

Pretty harsh Velocity. My EC's are quite strong. 4 years of chorus, select choir, area all-state, all county, etc.
Also: I tutored elementary school kids with their homework, 2 hrs a week for 3 years, volunteering

Academic challenge is the highest rated EC? Do you mean that there are many students who do Academic challenge or is it that college's regarded it as the most important, i.e. 84% of colleges regard Acdmic chllnge the highest?
