Next year's schedule: AP Govt, AP Physics, AP English, AP Spanish, Differential Eq's at UVA

Extracurriculars:
National Honor Society (11- )
Math Honor Society (11- )
Ultimate Frisbee (9- )
I go to the gym a lot
I'll play Varsity Football next year
I've started working (painting houses), and will be employed from now on, though maybe at a different job

Other stuff: I'll probably have my guidance counselor put this in her rec instead of mine: I had a series of family tragedies: dad died, then mom lost all her money, then she got cancer, and now she and I live in a real bad apartment complex living off 24 grand a year, and a year ago I broke my knee and had a $20,000 surgery. The people at the complex play their music all the time and so loudly that I can't work at home, so I ride my bicycle to UVA's libraries to do work, about 3 times a week, sometimes riding home at 2 in the morning.

I'm looking at Cornell (top choice), Middlebury, U Chicago, UVA (instate), Georgetown, Earlham, and my mom's making me apply to Princeton because I can get a rec from an alum.

I thought I wanted to major in Japanese, but my distance learning course sucks, and now it's just like a chore, so maybe I'll do math instead.

For Christ's sake, you're a valedictorian with a 4.0 UW and a 1500+ SAT...what do you think?

sure about that math score on the old SAT???
I'm pretty sure that a 720 and a 750 dont add up to a 1510 (try 1470)

Haha, whoops. I meant to put a 790 for Verbal; I accidentally put my new verbal score there.

And for jpps1, I know I can compete with anyone there academically, but my e/c's are severely lacking.

Not everyone is in your tough situation, so you actually have a valid excuse as to why you're EC's are lacking.

Congrats for pulling through. It must have been tough, it'll pay off BIG at the end. keep it up!

make your personal essay OWN. make it personal and tell the real story about yourself.

don't exaggerate, but tell the facts how they are.

and why is your Japanese SAT Ii so low?

My Japanese SATII is so low because I don't learn much through the distance learning course; it's not well designed and to be honest now all I do is teach myself through the textbook, instead of watching the classes.

And the thing is, my situation sounds really hard, but it's not that bad. I mean, my father's death was a long drawn out process, so it was expected, and my mom's had cancer for like 3 years now, and I don't see her dying anytime soon. The only real bad thing about it is that my apartment complex is like 85% hispanic, and that's fine except for their music; every song has the same beat and it's driving me insane, hearing it 24/7 for 4 years now. Though I guess in an essay I could turn that from being "my situation isn't so bad" to "my situation is tough, but I've overcome it" or something. Oh yeah, so should I include that all in my essay or have my guidance counselor put it in her reccomendation?

I wouldnt even try to get the Jap score up. Take Math 1C also, it counts and you might get an 800.

Cornell (top choice): Match
Middlebury: Safe Match
Chicago: Match
Earlham: Big Safety
UVA: Safety
Princeton: Reach

If you like Middlebury, Princeton, and Cornell you will love Dartmouth and maybe Duke also. You might not like Chicago very much, its nothing like the other schools on your list.

Wait, so colleges will accept both Math SATII's as two tests?

Bump. And should I put all that info in my other essay, or in my GC's rec?

Write it in your essay. Your EC's are a bit lacking but you have a good excuse for that so...I'd say your chance at Cornell is around 80%

You have strong chances everywhere, and even at Princeton I think you will be an applicant that gets looked over a bit extra considering how academically succesful you are despite the crazy circumstances. Try to take some more SATIIs if you can, and best of luck in college and life.

if it's for real, that the stories you told are real, my heart goes out to you. but if this is meant to be as a fake post, shame on you, get a life, this is very cruel

SATII scores are in:
USH - 800
Math IIc - 740

I'll retake the Math. Does anybody have any ideas as to what my third SATII should be? I suppose I could self study Biology or Chem, but it's been so long since I took those courses that it'd be like starting from scratch. We learned pretty much nothing in physics this year, so I can't take that SATII yet. I'm taking AP Physics or AP Chem this year, whichever one they offer, but I don't know if I'd have learned enough by January to take the SATII for that subject...

why isn't writing your 3rd SAT II?

you can definitely be very competitive at any of those schools.

I don't think colleges will accept writing as a third SATII, will they? Besides, I don't think a 700 is high enough anyway.

Bump. 10 Characters.
