I also received a C in maths, 9th grade. Do you think this will significantly alter my chances at these schools? My reason is that I moved state-to-state that year, which lead to the slip in grade. Now my math average is an 86. Junior Yr, I got 6 90's and 2 high 80's (86). What do you think my chances are at these schools. I will have stellar recommendations from both my counselor and teachers. Please give me advice. Also can you please tell me other schools I should apply to? Thanks and sorry for this ridiculously long post lol..

I think the C in math may or may not make a serious impact upon your chances, depending upon what school/major you're applying to (engineering for example it could be a problem). The 800 2c is a good counterargument, but it could make you look lazy.

Cornell is a reach, NYU is a match, Chicago is a slight reach, UCLA is a match if you're instate or more of a reach if you're out of state. Stanford is a reach, and, btw they don't consider your freshman year grades/courses which is a good thing in your case.

I'd say the weakest part of your application (besides the courseload your fresh/soph years and your math grade) is your lack of leadership. Good luck!

thanks for your reply 12041987. Im going to major in art/sciences, such as biochem, or philosophy. I plan on attending med school in the future. I think I have leadership especially in Key Club( treasurer and exec member), and homecoming committee(exec board member). I know they are not great, but I wouldve become prez if the position was still available. BTW, I just won an award honoring my dedication and humanitarian spirit at the hospital. Any other opinions? Im especially interested on my chances at Cornell. Am I considered as a competitive applicant, or a mediocre/subpar applicant? Thank you.

since ur from New York, not having an SAT score will look very fishy. In New York, around 90 percent take the SAT. You want to be in that 10 percent that doesn't?

kk thanks. I took the ACT as I wasnt prepared for the SAT. If I scored poorly, I wouldve taken the SAT in October. Do I have to take the SAT since I already scored high on the ACT? Thanks

Don't worry about the SAT, colleges look at ACT, my S only used that and had great success. A C freshman year will not hurt you, many colleges don't even look at freshman grades.A 33 is a great score. You should be fine at Cornell. Do well 1st semester and you will have some great choices! My S is at Pomona with only ACT, my best friends D is at Brown with only ACT. I could go on but you get the point.

thanks for the positive post arizonamom. Do you think I have a good shot of getting in ED, or should I just apply to NYU since people are saying that it is a match? Im getting very worried. What do you think?

You have a good chance at NYU, a solid shot at Cornell if you get your retake scores higher, and Chicago (but they are...quirky, and they ask essay questions about peanut butter). I don't know much about UCLA or Stanford, besides that they are both very hard, especially out of state.

kk thanks thethoughtprincess. Also, I volunteered at an ayurveda clinic( homeopathy) in India during the summer of 9th grade. My recs will be strong and I hope to send the college an abstract of my project on diabetes. Can you guys recommend some good schools that I have a good chance of getting into. Should I also try UPenn? Thanks

i think that you should visit these schools...and then decide which one YOU fit...even though the people at collegeconfidential offer great suggestions...you are the one that is going to be attending the college...my top choices are my top choices because i feel like i would fit in there...based on visit and what im looking for...will i get into these schools? maybe...maybe not...but its still worth a shot...go for what you feel fits you best
