How does s/he have a "great chance" at Penn?
While the grades and test scores listed are good, the ECs (any awards?) are very mediocre. Plus, we know nothing about location or ethnicity.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the replies. But it would be really helpful if I could get some more opinion. BTW, I live in Maryland and I am a male asian (From India).

Sure, 500 hours is very good... But she's not the only Penn applicant who will have that (and many will have more). Of her ECs listed, I don't think she held one leadership position... And no major awards. Those are essential criteria for an Ivy League school.

And the world is becoming insanely competitive, to answer your last question.

as an applicant with not so great ecs (500 hrs is commendable, but its one ec, and theres no leadership... plus 500 hrs over high school is 125 a year, which isnt really a huge amount of time to put into an EC... a sport is like, 15-25 (wrestling is actually 35, at least for me)a week)... that said, i think youre a slight reach for penn and columbia, as your grades and sats are great and the 500 hrs is good (tho just good)... honors program at maryland is likely i would assume, but im not that familiar with it... in state im sure helps quite a bit, so i think youll be good
