Chances at Duke University?

Hello!

I go to a prestigious, small private school, and transferring from a big public school, I had a hard time getting used to the academics, etc.

But I wanted to know my chances of getting into Duke. I wanted to apply for the visual art major and a minor in global health. Right now my gpa is low but I feel like an overall improvement would look good as well?

Freshman year: 3.07
Sophomore year: 3.58
Junior Year: 3.79
Senior Year: 4.44
ACT: 26

My extracurriculars:
-I have been painting (oil painting) ever since I was 7. I do more abstract things than people.
-I have a business called BeeAnArtist (beeanartist.com)
-I wrote and illustrated a book called "Dancing between the Wind"
-I've raised over $10,000 with my book for the Children's Hospital Los Angeles where I was born with ECMO, something that effected my brain, so it's always been harder for me to study
-I've raised over $2,000 for child trafficking in Vietnam (my parent's home country)
-I had a job at the LAB, an antimall in Costa Mesa, CA where I found local artists and musicians to play at the monthly artwalks during the summer before senior year
-I'm in XC and captain of the Varisty Swim team
-I've been selling my book at local farmer's markets + artwalks
-I market my book and website through facebook (170 likes), twitter and wordpress
-I founded (with my peers) CrossCulturalCommunicating.wordpress.com where we spread our love of the arts (visual, theatre, writing) to children in Vietnam and here in the US
-I'm the artist for publications (yearbook, newspaper, online)
-I'm the artist for Mock Trial

This year my courses are:
AP Studio Art
AP Enviro
AP Calc AB
AP Stats

I'm applying ED to Duke, which might give me a slightly more of an advantage, but I'm not sure. If I'm a strong artist, (since some artists are particularly known to have less of a gpa) will that also effect my admissions? Please let me know because I am IN LOVE with Duke and I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else.

You have some interesting EC’s; however, your ACT is too low to be really considered. Try to raise it to a 30+ or take the SAT. Without those, admittance is highly unlikely, unfortunately. It’s not impossible, but extremely unlikely. I hope I am not being too blunt. Your GPA also does not stand out and is below average. Don’t let that pull you down, though. I’ve heard of crazier stories!
Best of luck.

lol I am not really one to judge but I don’t necessarily think posting the number of likes you got on Facebook is really something you want to put on there… Also you should calculate your cumulative Gpa.

You sound like you’ve had a really interesting life, which is fantabulous. However, realize that you are way below the 25% mark with your ACT scores-- the middle 50% was 31-34 for Trinity last year.

If you are deferred until RD, you definitely, definitely need to retake the ACT or try to get the SAT+2 Subject-- you really do need to be academically competitive.
