Chances at good Engineering Schools

Well, these are my grades, scores, EC's, etc.

Firstly I would like to say, the high school i go to is a competitive private school with a class of 99 students. Only 1 or 2 of these students gets straight A's, and A+'s arent even a possible grade (highest grade possible is an A). Also, the American History 11th grade course and English 11 courses are not officially AP's (because my school does not give any official AP courses in English or History), but I took the AP for both of these subjects as did many kids in my grade. P.S. I am Indian, a minority class which will not be much of a help i guess :(.

9th Grade
English 9 (B+)
History 9 (A-)
Algebra II & Trig (A-)
Physics (A)
Spanish II (B+)
Electronic Publishing Web (A-)
Concert Band (A)

10th Grade
English 10 (B+)
U.S. History (B)
Adv. Precalculus (B+)
Accelerated Chemistry (B+)
Plant & Animal Bio. Sem. (B+)
Spanish III (B+)
Comp. Science (B+)
Electronic Publishing II-Web (A)

11th Grade
English 11 (B-) This is because i got caught in some retarded plagiarism * in which i supposedly stole ideas and got a D+ for my 4th quarter as a punishment, I will be appealing this*
20th Century World History (B+)This end of year grade was retarded, as it was an incorrect average of my grades.. the teacher kept consistently rounding down, which i dont understand, I actually deserve an A-
AP Calculus I (A-)
AP Chemistry (B+)
Spanish IV (A-)
Etymology (B+)
Electronic Publishing: Dial I (Newspaper) (A-)

I have taken 4 APs this year, and plan to taking 5 AP courses next year and getting very good grades on them.

My school does not rank or have GPAs.

SAT I: 2320 (800 Math, 780 Writing, 740 Critical Reading)
SAT IIs: 800 Math IIC
800 Physics
790 Chemistry
PSAT: 224

Accomplishments+other help: Columbia Science Honors Program (from where i get a letter of recomendation from a Columbia professor), passed AMC, Honors 9th and 11th grades, National Merit Semifinalist (prob)

ExtraCurriculars: I have focused mostly on two things: Chess and Tae Kwon Do. In Tae Kwon Do, I am a black belt, and I teach (as a paid job). In chess, I am a former Top 50 List member, and probably will get back onto 16-year old top 50 list again this summer (since I finally have time). I also spend a lot of time with computers and hope to be able to use my experience with computers as a benefit.

Volunteer Work: I am a volunteer fireman, and have volunteered 100+ hours at a Rehab Hospital, where I have worked in their information services department and also by transporting patients.

Schools I am looking at include MIT, Northwestern, Columbia, University of Michigan Ann-Arbor, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Rensellear Polytechnic Institute. Some probable safeties (i hope) include University of Colorado Boulder and Rochester Institute of Technology

btw, in terms of college placement from my school, probably 20 or so every year get into the ivy's out of a class of 100

can some1 plz help?

bumpity bump... some1 please please help

bump.. please please help guys

cmon help me out guys, just post what my chances are at those colleges in my list and tell me how i can improve

bring up my post

!! nobody has anything to say?!!

Good SAT scores. You should get involved more in your school. They like passions, but only two clubs looks bad. The fact that your school sends a lot of people to ivy's is good for you. And dont make excuses about your grades. Just deal with it and move on. If it was like a c, d, or f then maybe you should complain, but your grades are fine. The schools you listed are good. Some are possible reach while others are safety. Did you ever think about Cal. It's excellent at engineering. Just an idea though. Not everyone can handle Berkeley.

thanks for the advice, keep it coming :)

It's hard to make recommendations without knowing your financial situation, but don't overlook in-state publics....many offer fine engineering programs for very low cost. If privates are within your budget, you might consider Lehigh.

um, the financial situation isnt going to have a drastic effect upon my choices--what are my chances at the schools on the post?

Chances are great everywhere, except MIT and perhaps Columbia....where nobody has a great chance......

thanks :) thats really encouraging--im thinking of applying to Columbia Engineering early--the problem is that my college counsellor calls everything where people with the same scores have gotten in reaches, which is really discouraging

cmon guys... only 1 person has replied.. i wanna know what you all think :)

looks like you have pretty good chances. dont worry about the hard school because the college can see you in terms of the other students and will also receive a profile of your school.

thanks misterme, i was banking on the profile because it shows how tough my school is, also I think that a 5 on the AP Chemistry and 790 on the SAT II, as well as my scores compared to my grades, would more than make up for my not-so-hot grades

any1 else have an opinion?

bump... cmon guys ive only gotten 2 people to reply so far--tell me your opinions

bump cmon guys, say what u think....
