I am a junior currently and first in my class. I'm really interested in finance and engineering and am going to apply to Upenn and harvard. What are my chances (ED/EA and RD) at harvard and upenn Fisher program?

What are my chances?? My grades are not a problem, although I will retake the ACT. How about my EC's ? Are my achievements enough?
Thanks

I’d say…

Harvard = Reach

Upenn = Good shot (but wharton = reach).

Do you think I should apply EA to harvard or ED to UPenn (Jerome fisher and wharton backup)?

What about other ivy leagues like columbia, cornell, princton, and yale?

Chinese competition? Never heard of it.

Also, schedule this year?

AP Bio, Diff eq (PSEO at college), English(our school doesnt have AP English), AP Euro, multivariable calc (at college), Chinese

The chinese competition(汉语桥 Chinese Bridge) is pretty big-- the international competition is 18 days in China, completely free, and attract finalists from 43 nations

Your doing great. Both schools are still a reach as they are for anyone, but you are a competitive applicant. Just try to improve ACT to 35/36.

bump… please give some feedback!

You have an awesome chance! And even if you dont get into the program you are deff gonna go far because you obviously seem really motivated:)
good luck:D

chance me?

If you want engineering, you might try Cornell too… provided that Cornell EA is non-restrictive.

But M&T at UPenn is a reach for anyone. Putting a high match status to someone chanced for M&T at UPenn was the worst chancing mistake I made thus far.

you sir have a good shot anywhere. seriously.

Can someone explain to me how a 4.1 unweighted GPA is possible? Is A+ >4.0 or something?

Have you helped the poor ? Is your essay very personal, and moving ? Did you use your math and science ability to improve a social condition ? The best chance at an Ivy for you is to show strength in these “people” areas. No offense, but an Asian with high Math and Science scores is pretty ho hum to the Ivies. But if you can show a human, and a compassionate, humane side, then you have a good shot. Good luck !

ButterPecan made a great point. You have the grades, ECs, APs, etc. that these colleges are looking for and are a perfect candidate for either! But I don’t see much evidence of your social/volunteer work that will make you a standout applicant that appears compassionate and willing to help others. That should be something to focus on in the upcoming year to really round out your application well!

Regarding whether you should apply ED to Penn or Harvard, you have to go with the school that appeals most to you. I would say Harvard is a little higher of a reach than Penn, so if I were in your shoes, I might apply Harvard ED, Penn RD, but I really think its important that you try to visit both, review their curriculum, etc. to determine which is the most appealing to you, and then apply ED to the one that most interests you!

Good luck and please chance me back:

you’re too amazing… seriously. i really wouldnt be surprised if you got into every school you applied to.

but do take to heart what ButterPecan said and show a more compassionate side.

you’ll go far.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1409730-chance-me-top-schools-thanks.html

I am going to do a study abroad next year for one whole year in China. I think this will show dedication and depth and stuff. Any comments??

Also, for the volunteer work, a few months ago I started working with underprivileged kids in math and chinese tutoring. I really want to try to teach basic Chinese to these kids(plus they are all very poor and URM). I plan on really leveraging this in my essays because it really is something I am passionate about.

Go crimson… and UPENN - you are more likely to get shot there then get a degree!! West Philly is D-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s! The low lifes walk all around the campus and are the same people they hire for security (and their lousy food service)!!

Solid applicant. Don’t make the mistake of applying to too few reach schools
Good luck!

very good chances at either. if ur really into UPenn, i say go UPenn. u will def get in… (the ED app boost is very significant - i have friends who got in with this). personally, if ur unhooked (not URM/legacy/recruited athlete) Harvard SCEA isn’t the best choice… trust me.

Hm…one of the only flaws I see is the 13 APS…how many APs were possible? I know from someone who used to be a Harvard admissions officer they would see that as a MAJOR flaw and may sometimes even discard your application because of it! They want to know they you went the extra mile, did all APs, etc.
