Hey guys, please give me my chances at Harvard (and, if you feel like it, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Brown, Amherst, U Chicago, Barnard...but mostly H)

SAT: 800 V, 780 M (1580) (taken twice--720 math the first time)
GPA: Like 90, 3.7ish (my school doesn't do GPAs...or rank for that matter)
School: Very very elite competitive private
SAT IIs: 800 Math IIC, 800 Writing, 800 Physics
APs: Physics B-5, AB Calc-5, English Lit-5, English Lang-4, French-5
Courseload: Not quite the hardest available (close, though)
Extracurriculars: writing at the national level (major national poetry award); three instruments--piano, voice, and viola (voice is at the state level with 3rd place in competition); lit mag. Senior year spent abroad in France (would have been editor in chief of lit mag otherwise).

Essays: Peachy
Recs: Peachy

ps. freshman year I got a C in a very hard math course (VERY hard -- 6 out of 13 people got C's -- and note the 800 math IIc.) I also dropped down in math junior year. Eesh.

Rahulkghosh,
No... but I thought these days colleges weren't so big on the sports-clubs-volunteering trio and preferred state or national recognition (I have both). In other words, I'm not well-rounded, but I do have a hook. And isn't that more important?

I THINK HE KNOWS HOW competitive his private school is. But yeah, actually I just really thought about that, since you got a C which 6 out of 12 people got, then wouldn't you be at the bottom half of the class?

I have no idea. You have a hook with the poetry. The 800 Math IIC is okay, cause everyone gets 800 Math IIC these days. I have no idea. I would still say "reach".

You have good test scores on both the AP and SAT tests. However, I don't think the voice will be that good of a hook, alot of people do this kind of stuff and you have to be REALLY good like national level to have it be a major hook. However, I guess the smaller things will add up. If you play any other instruments at state level I think that'd be good on your resume too.

About the C, what math class was it in? If it was something like Calc I guess its understandable and the adcoms will understand, but if its something like geometry or alg 2, it may scar your chances a bit.

Overall I think you have a very good shot, you have a couple of small hooks which should add up and your test scores are solid as are most of your grades. Most of the ivies are a toss up for everyone other than the extremely exceptional, so I'd say you have as good of a chance as anyone else. U chicago and Amherst should be okay.

thats why you go to a public school and beat everyone else and then get into harvard. otherwise your prospects of getting into the ivies unless u stand out academically are low. sad to say it but it's the truth.
