Essay contests/scholarships
- All-American Essay Contest
- Ayn Rand Annual Essay Contest
- One World Essay Scholarship

Have you placed in these essay contests?

Sinbad, you have a excellent shot at all the schools listed, but you must remember that the Ivies are always a crapshoot. I am sure that you could get in one of the Ivies or Stanford.

Great chance at all UCs, Cornell and Brown. Top ivies, who knows?

Lakers08 - Won them

RoseIcicle - If you are so offended and "sickened" by people like me why are you even here, and why do you have a post on this forum yourself?

You posted back in May that you got into HYPS as a recruited athlete and you were deciding among them. How is it that you're suddenly a junior applying to colleges? Were you lying back then?

sorry, u didn't win Ayn Rand becuz the winner is from Indiana. Also u couldn't have been notified if u entered in 2005 cuz winners get notified on July 15th.

It's also hard to believe that he is an NMS finalist, when we have to wait almost a year to hear who will be.

I won regionals for Ayn Rand in 2004.

I figured I was NM since I scored a 240.

Well, there's nothing like getting into HYPMS twice! This is a new achievement, kids who can get in once have become ordinary!

i am hestitant to say this but i think you will most likely get into 1 if not all of HYPS.

People might say to me "there's no guarantees at HYPS," and there aren't. But the bottom line is admissions, even at these top schools, are not completely random. About half the people w/ your SAT scores are rejected, but your extracurriculars are phenomenal. The only thing that could sting a tiny bit is your rank. I would put your chances at HYPS at around 75% for each.

Columbia 80%.
Berkeley 95% (most likely w/ scholarship)
Brown: 85%
Cornell: 90%
UCLA: 95% (most likely w/ scholarship)
UCSD: 100%
UCI: 100%

80% at Columbia where 45% of 1600s were rejected this year? Why do kids do this to other kids?

zagat, based on your data 55% of perfects were accepted. Someone w/ sinbad's stats (incl. SAT II's) is comparable in test scores to the typical perfect score SAT I applicant, and even if you could argue that he is short of such an applicant it is reasonable to say that 50% of the people w/ his scores are accepted.

His rank is avg. for a top applicant (2330 SAT), so from this alone we would est. his chances at 50%.

Throw in All-American water polo, 4 years of research (including a full-time summer research internship program, winning 3 national essay contests, eagle scout, & 400 volunteer hours and I think 80% is quite possible, but maybe it is a bit high.

If you were to give him a percentage, what would you give? I trust your comments & would like to hear your insights.

Also, 2 questions:
-Where do you find the actual #s as to what percent of perfect scores are rejected? Where do you find the #s for how many 1590s, 1580s, etc are accepted?
-Would you like to comment on my stats? I do trust your opinions, and perhaps the numbers that I gave this person are too high.

4 kids from my school got into columbia this year, and none of them had a 1600. 2 in the 1400s 2 in the 1500s.

I would say that his ECs are his "weakest" point (no extremely competitive national acheivements)...even though you are phenomenol.

His rank is actually quite good since colleges will see a 3.9 UW and the fact that his school doesn't rank makes top 5% the highest increment.
