Chances at impacted major at UC Berkeley?

Hello all! I just finished my first year at UC Davis and I am hoping to transfer to Berkeley as a Chemical Biology major.

Currently, my GPA is a 4.0 with many A+. My extracurriculars include an internship at a hospital in spring quarter and a leadership program spanning the two years at Davis.

Do you think I will have a favorable chance at admission to Berkeley in this heavily impacted major (and as a UC to UC transfer nevertheless!)?

Also, would admissions be easier if I choose Chemical Biology as my major or choose the nonimpacted Biological Chemistry major but am missing one pre-req? I wouldn’t finish the last quarter of ochem series at Davis if I transfer in 3rd year.

that one missing pre-req is gonna kill you… i say go for chemical biology. i thought it wasnt impacted?

Do you think they may be more lenient if I take the last organic chem class over summer at Davis before transferring and mention that in the comments?

I’m hoping they would because the Biological Chemistry major in Letters and Science college is much easier to get in (35%) whereas Chemical Biology in the College of Chemistry is only 19% admit rate =(

less than 1% of transfers are from uc to uc. so you will need a compelling reason for doing so, and make sure you don’t go over the max units

why not go for just chemistry? in the college of chemistry? im pretty sure its easier…

Thank you guys for answering my questions!

Well my reason for transferring is that Berkeley is closer to home so I could go to my doctor more often for minor health reasons. Also, Berkeley’s Chemistry and Biology program is better than Davis and I want more challenge in terms of course rigor as well as seeking a more intellectually stimulating student body. Plus Berkeley is generally more prestigious than Davis. I’m hoping that’s reason enough…

I’m also hoping that maybe they will see that I have a pretty good GPA and that I came from Davis, which means that my major courses are tough and rigorous enough. Just having trouble choosing which major though.

I think you have a really good chance at being accepted. my initial “1%” stat was ambiguous, as explained in a previous thread. the actual rate among all transfer admits is 3.9%, and among uc to uc alone, about 23%. But you are clearly in the top of the pile, so i would certainly encourage you to apply.

Well, I’m glad. 23% sounds much better than 1%!

Does anyone know if the 118 Ochem series at Davis is equivalent to the 112 series at Berkeley?

I did a successful UC to UC transfer to Berkeley from UCSD. My major was physics, which is not impacted in the least bit. However, my stats were very similar to yours (4.0 and all A+'s in my major requirements). Even though its impacted, you are still on top of the applicant pool, so you should be fine. Just make sure you get the requirements done. I think they frown upon completing requirements in the summer. In fact, in the admissions conditions, they say prereqs will not be considered if they’re taken over the summer, so make sure you talk to your advisers about that and possibly email a Berkeley representative.
