Chances at MIT

Hello friends,

I hate to be that guy who starts one of these chance me threads but oh well.

During freshman/sophomore years of high school I was home schooled (essentially by myself as my parents are high school drop outs). I believe that my portfolios which I will be sending to colleges will be very impressive. (I'm essentially a year ahead in mathematics, and have been reading books like catcher and the rye and other 11-12th grade books as a part of my freshman curriculum).

For my last two years of high school I've decided to enroll in an online high school called K-12, just to get the feel of a traditional work environment. The following are my transcripts / AP test scores and other scores affiliated with last year:

AP World History
AP Physics C
AP English Language and Comp
CP French III
AP Environmental Science (.5 credit class)
AP Psychology (.5 credit class)
AP Statistics
AP Calculus BC

(Actually I took physics and calc via EPGY)

I got high As in all of the above classes, and got 5s on the 8 affiliated AP exams last year.

Oh, and for freshman year I got a 4 on AP Bio, and during sophomore year a 5 on AP Euro.

as for test scores:

I've taken the SAT I once, last march:

SAT I Critical Reading 780
SAT I Mathematics 800
SAT I Writing 800

SAT II Mathematics II 800
SAT II Physics 800
SAT II Lit 760
SAT II World Hist 780
SAT II French Lang 750

AMC 12- 115.5

AIME - 6

(the amc/aime were taken last year as were most of the SAT IIs, except for french which I took in october)

During last summer I also took Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus I, Light and Heat, and Modern physics with EPGY, scoring either Passes or As in all of them.

This year I'm taking the following classes with K-12:

AP English Lit
AP Chemistry
CP French IV
AP U.S. Government
AP Economics
AP Computer Sci

as well as intermediate mechanics, differential equations, multivariable calc ii, and real analysis with EPGY.

As for extra curriculars/honors and stuffs:

last year I was a national semi finalist for the u.s. physics team

AIME High scorer

California State Science Fair Honorable Mention

Scholastic Inc national bronze medal for a short story

National finalist in the peace essay competition thingy

during last year I worked 20+ hrs a week doing clerical/accountant work for my family's company.

I started this small project which raised over 5,000 dollars used to fund a tribe of 3rd world africans

I'm a national high school honor society member (for whatever that's worth lol)

National AP Scholar Award

Last summer I attended the TASP summer program and this fall I'm working as an intern for NASA's DEVELOP program (environmental science)

Since last december I was an active member in the local zeitgeist movement chapter (basically an organization devoted to social change/ science where we would meet and discuss things)

Besides the tangible I'm truly passionate about learning, especially when it comes to helping humanity and learning about quantum physics :)

As far as hooks go...I dont believe they should really affect decisions, but I am a first gen high school graduate/college student.

My family's quite poor, we live in a mobile home community, and I help support them by working for our company.

I have had a prosthetic leg since soon after birth, following a birth defect. But I can walk perfectly and like to mountain bike / go airsofting with neighborhood friends.

Despite the nature of the stereotypical home school kid, I think I have pretty good social skills, a kick ass sense of humor, and many amazing friends (from my neighborhood, zeitgeist chapter, and students at my local public high schools)

I'm shooting for MIT, Stanford, Columbia, and maybe Yale/Princeton/Harvard and Amherst

MIT is my top choice, with stanford and columbia coming in at close seconds.

I think my essays / recommendations will be pretty spot on, so besides that I'm interesting in getting some realistic feedback from my cyber friends :)

btw, it means a lot to me for those of you who stuck through this boring, poorly structured, and sloppy post I wrote at 5:03 AM :)

Bonus pts for actually responding.

Thanks guise! Peace be with you.

oh and bump, as is the custom

Hello!!! You are MIT’15…

pretty much in, not gonna lie…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1032253-chance-me-please-ivies-others-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Most other MIT/HYSP applicants will have the same stats as you but the fact that you have the drive to home-school yourself and learn all that on your own and excel will propel you hopefully to the top of their applicant pool. Let’s hope your essays are convincing!

Best of luck!

I agree 100% with crmichi.

If you write a solid essay, you will have a great chance.

Wow, I’m really impressed. I think you’re pretty much in. Congrats.

make your interview and essays good
your stats are great
if you show a genuine interest in mit, you should probably make it in

I agree with the previous posts you are as good as you can get to get in there just make sure you have a safety school chance me back. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1033113-chance-me-ill-chance-you-back.html</a></p>

Don’t play the poor me card in your essays… You can’t really be denied unless you mess up big time by doing something dumb(such as playing the poor me card in all of your essays and such).

I’d have Swarthmore and Duke on your list… Seems like both are in your ballpark as probables and while they differ a lot, both seem to fit your bill. Good luck buddy.
