Chances for Harvard/MIT?

I'm a second semester junior right now, but I do plan on applying early to Harvard, depending on my chances/SAT score from March. I really like the Massachusetts duo (MIT/Harvard). I like cold weather, and I am really passionate about my academics. :) Anyways, I will list everything I have so far here. Please give me your honest opinion on whether I could get into Harvard/MIT or not!

White Male, Public School. Both parents have Bachelor's Degrees.
4.0 GPA unweighted (4.7 weighted with AP's) so far. All A's through semester 1 junior year in every subject. I take the most rigorous course load that my high school offers. On track to be valedictorian.

8 AP Classes so far: Euro, Environmental, Computer Science, Chemistry, Calculus BC, United States History, Statistics, English Language.
4 AP Tests: Biology (4), Euro (5), Environmental (4), Computer Science (5). I will be taking 5 more (Calc BC, Chem, US, Stat, and English Lang) this May. Taking Psychics, English Lit, Government in Senior year (May 2014).
AP Scholar With Honor Award

770 on Math IIC SAT Subject test (gross, I know. retaking in June). I am also going to take Chem, U.S. History this June. Probably Physics senior year.

Taking regular SAT I in March.

223 PSAT in California. Most likely (?) National Merit SF/F.

I will be taking Multivariable Calculus/Differential Equations during Senior Year at a local college since I have exhausted my school's math courses.

I interned for 100+ hours at a math learning center during spring of 10th grade and summer between 10th and 11th grade. My supervisor/boss liked me so much that I was hired part-time.

I run a small import/export operation on the internet. It is legitimate, and I keep copious records of everything I do.

I am in the process of launching an aeronautics startup business which will manufacture specially-made hobbyist goods. I am preparing an advertising campaign, etc. for this.

I have taken three years of Spanish in high school. In addition, I also have taken Japanese for the last five years in order to enhance my business operations. I consider myself near-fluent in Japanese and fluent in Spanish.

Officer in many clubs, including: Anti-Drug Abuse Club (will be all 4 years), Anim

I think both Harvard and MIT will be reach. However, not as much of a reach as they would be for others. Your extracurricular activities are pretty good, but not amazing. However, your class rank will help you immensely since you are on track to becoming valedictorian! (Great job, by the way!)

I think your business ECs are actually pretty impressive and unique.

I have to agree with the previous poster that your business ECs do seem unique… are they enough to get you into one of those schools? Who knows. Definitely apply. You’re a strong applicant.

Chance me:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1409730-chance-me-top-schools-thanks.html</a></p>

I appreciate the input, everyone! I am certainly going to apply. I’m also thinking of joining tennis team for this season…though I don’t know how much that’ll help me this late in the game (I’d be applying for early admission in September-November 2013 and regular in 2014…).

I think I have a remote chance (at least) of getting into these schools. Are there people who have gotten into Harvard/MIT with similar grades/test scores/extracurriculars?

As an EA admit into MIT this year, I’d like to say that your a competitive applicant.

Like you will, I finished Multivariable Calc at a local college this year.

It would honestly be a waste of time and money to retake a 770 in Math II. MIT’s blogs specifically cite a case where a girl wanted to retake her SAT I after scoring a 750, and the ad com told her not to.

There is a marginal difference between a 770 and 800. Don’t waste your time, get your testing done before Senior year and focus on what you would like to write in your essays.

Your standardized scores will be higher than mine most likely. But they are not everything, so don’t really on that as an accurate metric.

Your ECs seem to reflect your passions, which is a big plus.

You’re on the right track, just finish your year strong and hope for the best when you submit your application.

Good luck.

Your application is amazing so you’ll definitely be competitive at any college you apply to. That said, its virtually impossible to chance an applicant for HYPSM unless he/she benefits from affirmative action (i.e. URM status, recruited athlete, legacy, or development case).

All I can tell you is that you should definitely apply to Harvard and MIT. If you show a lot of interest and work really hard on your essays, I think you can get into to almost any school you want. Good luck in the admissions process.

I’d say a low reach for both, which is really impressive for schools like that!

Take my advice and apply to more reaches. You don’t want devastation when you may get rejected from both

Thanks for the continued input, everyone! I have a new question: which would be better to apply to early: MIT or Harvard? I really don’t know the benefits of applying to one as opposed to the other early, but maybe I’m overlooking something. Advice would be appreciated. A girl from a nearby high school (female, Asian) was accepted into Harvard early in Dec. 2012, but her extracurriculars were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. So which should I apply to for early admission: MIT or Harvard?

Harvard’s early policy is SCEA, so you can’t apply to other colleges EA (aside from your state flagship) if you apply early to Harvard. MIT has an open EA policy, which means you can apply EA to other colleges that also have an open EA policy.

IMO, SCEA at Harvard isn’t worth it, even for an applicant as impressive as you are. I think you should apply EA to MIT, UChicago, Georgetown, and Caltech (all of which have open EA). If you write good essays, you’ll have an excellent chance of getting into at least one of these schools.

Pretty good chance- they’re hard to get into for anybody, but You sure do have a shot! Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=15268935</a></p>
