But it's weird, because while you have shown in all your classes that you have the knowledge to perform well (through your AP scores), your GPA shows you don't have the drive to do well, you aren't a hard worker even though you have the capability to be a 4.0 student.

However, with that workload, you definitely have a legitimate reason for the 3.0 (which by the way, is in the bottom 1% of all applicants). Whether or not your test scores are good enough to cancel out the below average GPA will be up to the college.

Stevens is a slight reach, NCSU is a match, definitely not a safety. Duke and UNC are reaches. I can see any competitive school rejecting you based on your GPA, especially state schools which are BIG on GPA. However, your courseload, AP scores, and SAT scores could make you an intriguing applicant.

*I used to get low marks in my first two years of high school but then I improved to mostly As and Bs in my junior year.

*I am top 25% of my school, which is extremely competitive.

*Most schools in NC have a 3.0 unweighted as their average. I believe that UNC has few applicants with that GPA but I think it's still much higher than 1%.

* 82% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher
* 12% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74
* 4% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49
* 1% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24
* 1% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

i independent studied most of the AP material this year and my grades were pretty good this yr. Again, my GPA dropped after freshman and sophomore years when I got bad grades.

you've got a lot of test scores...some good scores, some not. I'd say your 3.0 isn't as god-awful as people make it out to be, but it is going to be a problem. The biggest hole in your app, in my opinion, is your SAT score, which is a 20-something...sorry can't remember already - you have so many test scores. With a higher test score everything will add up to the fact that you are very motivated, as is already demonstrated by your independent studying and classes. As of now, I just don't see it adding up, and I don't think the admissions officers at UNC-CH will either. Everything on your app is pretty good except your GPA and your slightly low test scores. To offset your GPA, a good SAT score is in order. Not sure how good, but I'd aim for 2150+. In that case, I'd say you've got a decent shot at UNC-CH.

I'm sorry, but I don't think Duke is going to happen at this point. Maybe save for grad school...
