NYU and BU are my top choices, and I want to know if I should expect the worst so I won't be dissapointed. My GPA is only so-so and I don't have a ton of extra-curriculars, but my SAT score is pretty good. Despite only getting a 700 on the Writing section, I expect to have a good essay (I only got one wrong on the multiple choice portion, and I like to think I'm a pretty good writer- I'm going to major in Journalism). I'm sure my teacher and counselor recs will also be very good. So, do I have a shot? I want brutal honesty- I'd hate to get my hopes up and not get in.

I think BU is definitely a match, NYU is maybe a slight reach just because of your GPA, but you have a strong Senior schedule and if you have a good mid-year report then I don't think you will have any problems. I think you are definitely being realistic, but in the gamble that is college admissions, you definitely need to have other schools than NYU and BU to look at. You might want to consider U of Maryland, Penn State, and others as safer matches.

For NYU make sure to get really good teacher recs (which you already mentioned you would). Also, what do you think defines you and how can you portray that to the colleges that you are applying to?

what's the average HS gpa of a BU/BC accepted applicant?

Well BU and BC are very different but BU's average GPA is 3.61.

BU is getter than BC, go BU

*better - sorry

If I reply, will that move this post up? I hope so, I'm trying it...

Yay for CTY! What site did you go to?

LOL naytin... I went to Lafayette the summer before 10th grade... so that was 2003? Yeh, I think so. I couldn't stand it, though. I was 15, and my parents let me go into the city alone (I live very close to NYC), but I wasn't allowed to walk around the campus by myself! We practically need a chaperone to go to the bathroom! LOL. And Lafayette is very small. I liked the class, though. Where'd you go?

I was at Lancaster from 02-04. Your description of Lafayette reaffirms my belief that Lancaster is the best CTY site. I had a lot of fun there.

About your original post. I'd say you have an excellent shot at NYU and BU if you are able to raise your SAT's a bit (they're fine now, but NYU uses SAT scores heavily so it will help) and if you kick butt first semester to show that you can do better than 3.428. Best of luck.

Aaah, I finally know what bump means. So.... bump

Considering that your verbal is way above the 75% percentile at NYU (per their common data set), and your math is only slightly below the 75th percentile, I really don't think SAT's will be a problem.
