chances at penn/columbia/cmu/nyu/hopkins

i have this post in all of the individual forums of each college, and i have gotten a few helpful replies. but i would really like more input on my chances at each school with the statistics i provide. i really need help identifying which of these schools are reach schools and which are reasonable schools.

i plan on applying to:
UPENN
Columbia
New York University (science school)
Carnegie Mellon (science)
Johns Hopkins

My stats are:

GPA:
unwieghted-> freshman and sophomore year probably around 3.5 out of 4.0, this year as a junior probably closer to 3.7/3.8 out of 4.0
weighted-> freshman and sophomore year is 4.96 out of 6.0 (i know i really screwed this one up...=(...), this year however i have around a 5.5 out of 6.0

SAT: 720 math, 700 reading, 680 writing (going to retake)

Extracirriculars:
Biology team (11, plan on doing it 12)
physics team (plan on doing it 12)
academic decathalon (11, plan on doing it 12)
jazz band (11, plan on doing it 12)
tennis (jv 9, varsity 10/11/12)
football (jv 9 and 10)
national honor society (11, 12)
latin honor society (11, 12)
Volunteer at hospital: 50 hours this past summer, plan on 50 more this summer
Volunteer for PEC organization: 8 hours last year, plan on 8 more hours this year
I also have been cleaning up my local beach every fourth of july (and believe me, thats no easy job...-.-, so i guess thats comm service

in my free time i spend plenty of time playing the saxophone. i can pretty much confidently say i am the best saxophonist in the school (or at least one of the best). i also snowboard avidly during the winter. if i had to pick one activity that i am truely passionate about, it is snowboarding. i could give up on life now and snowboard forever as a bum if my parents let me, but i know they wont so ill stop dreaming. i also would like to say that i know, that i am aware of how badly i screwed up my freshman and sophomore years. i pretty much realized what a mistake i made at the end of sophomore year and thats when i really started picking my grades up. i havent let my grades drop since. it should also be noted that i am the youngest kid in my class. i just turned 16 this year where most people are turning 17 or 18. i also have a legacy at PENN, as my mom graduated near the top of her class from pennvet. i am indian (asian).

again i know i have to get more solid academic EC's on my transcript. i am applying to the summer science programs at UPENN, Columbia, Clark University and Johns Hopkins. i am also applying for admission to the ASF program for japanese or italian. i do plan on attending AT LEAST one of these programs over the summer (being that i get accepted into at least one...)

i am also going to take the test for the science honors program at Columbia at the end of this year for admission during my senior year.

i know for a fact that i will finish this year out with a solid 3.7/3.8 unwieghted GPA, or a 5.4-5.6 weighted GPA out of 6 (hopefully by the end of this year i will bein the top 10% of my class, as i realize i should have been all along). i know for a fact that my hard work is NOT going to slacken next year as i realize the dire situation i am in interms of academic performance. if i want to have a shot at any of these schools i realize i need to keep my grades up.

i plan on taking the ap test for bio/chem/history/euro history/comp sci/calc/physics by the time i end senior year.

i plan on taking SATII's for bio/history/calc BC/physics

again, i know i screwed upmy first 2 years, but do i still have chances at getting into these schools if i keep up my hard work and get some good EC's on that list? which schools are reach and which are reasonable schools?

thanks for all the help guys please i need as much feedback as possible. i am about to go into cardiac arrest and give up on life because of how badly i screwed up my first 2 years.

Raise your SAT scores to high 2200's or low 2300's and your chances will go up exponentially.

You are right about the EC's. Your GPA, while very good may be slightly low for penn. And your test scores aren't high enough to "make up" for it. You need what you call a "hook" or an outstanding EC to make you stand out.

Sorry if I was too blunt. But if you raise your scores and tack on a few (meaningful.....no laundry list) EC's, and ED 'em, I think you have shot.

you could shoot for the moon but you won't make it

I agree with the previous poster. I feel that ofr a good chance at schools like Penn and Columbia you need to beef up your SAT.

ok. well now i know i need at least 2200+ on SAT's, whichi hope to attain by the end of the april 1st test. hopefully ill get math 750 and writing 750. but besides that, what do you guys think my chances are at the other schools i mentioned? keep the posts comin im really greateful for your reply's. ive decided i AM going to apply ED to Columbia when the time comes.

Other schools:

Columbia - Tougher to get into than UPenn. Even with 2300 SATs it would be a reach.
New York University - You're competitve with your current stats. Pretty good chance.
Carnegie Mellon - Almost a match. Get the SATs and GPA up a bit and you'd be competitive.
Johns Hopkins - Need to get the SATs up to around 2200, etc.

Note that all the Ivies are difficult to get into. Figure even top students have about a 30% chance. Most applicants have no more than a 15% chance.
