Chances at Riverside

What is my chance at UC Riverside?
My UC weighted GPA is a 3.58 but the thing is I sadly have 1 D so I’m stressing out.
My SAT is 1380
I still have to take ACT
Help would be great thanks!

In which course did you receive your D? Do you plan to retake the course and in what HS grade level did you receive the D? 1st or 2nd semester? Intended major?

Precalculus Honors. First semester I got a C.

There is no makeup for that class

So you got a C 1st Semester for Honors Pre-Calc and a D 2nd semester correct? Are you taking Calculus Senior year?

So no makeup means you cannot replace your D grade. Taking a higher level Math course which is Calculus will validate the Pre-Calc course but unfortunately not replace the D grade.

So is your UC capped weighted GPA posted 3.58 include your D grade? Are you taking any weighted courses this summer which would help bump up your GPA?

What is your intended major for UCR? Your SAT score is competitive above the 50th percentile which will help your chances.
Below is some statistical data so with your current GPA you are looking about 50/50 chance depending upon major.
2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCB: 1%
UCLA: 2%
UCSD: 7%
UCSB: 8%
UCI: 7%
UCD: 14%
UCSC: 33%
UCR: 49%
UCM: 82%

2018 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCB: 1360-1540

UCLA: 1340-1540
UCSD: 1300-1520
UCSB: 1270-1500
UCD: 1220-1480
UCI: 1230-1490
UCSC: 1210-1450
UCR: 1130-1380
UCM: 1020-1280

My intended major is Biology. Next year I’m taking AP statistics. 3.58 is my UC weighted. I’m really worried I won’t even get into UCR.

Biology is a selective major at UCR so it will not be an easy admit just based on your GPA since UC’s tend to be very GPA focused. The UC’s continue to get more competitive each year, so you will need to apply widely. Why UCR in particular? Plenty of Cal states that are just as strong in Biology and where you have better odds for an acceptance. What is your career plan with Biology? You might want to consider taking the SAT subject test Math2 and if you score well, it could enhance your application.

My advice is apply to UCR/UCM/UCSC and several Cal states so you have options and if you write some strong essays, you never know where you may end up.

How about a my chances at Cal Poly Pomona?

Is Cal Poly Pomona your local CSU?
All CSU’s except Cal Poly SLO admit by Eligibility index and major. Based on your UC GPA and SAT score your EI is as follows: (3.58 x800)+ (1380)= 4244. This EI should make you competitive for the majority of the Cal states (San Diego State and Cal Poly SLO would be tougher). I would apply to the 3 UC’s (UCM/UCR/UCSC) and CPP, SDSU, CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, possibly San Jose State, San Marcos and maybe one non-impacted campus like San Francisco State, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills or San Bernardino. This would cover some Safeties, Matches and Reaches.

Ok thank you so much! But just to review, UCM and Cal Poly Ponoma along with other Cal states are my safety, UCR, UCSC, SLO, and San Diego State are my matches?

UCM, Cal Poly Pomona would be possible Safety schools but closer to a Match school. UCR will be a High Match 50/50 while UCSC, SLO and SDSU would be closer to a Low Reach schools. A true safety would be your local CSU (CPP?), possibly Fullerton and Long Beach but definitely the rest of the CSU’s.

SDSU’s 2018 EI threshold was 4400+ based on their average CSU GPA and SAT scores. An EI 4244 is competitive but not a guarantee plus 2019 data is not yet available.

@Gumbymom My brother is got into UCSC three years ago so is there a higher chance of me getting in since he got in? Like a sibling hook similar to several private schools.

UC’s do not consider legacy/siblings etc… so no extra bump.

Ok well thank you so much for your help! I’ll aim for getting accepted into all those CSUs and UCR and UCM and hopefully, I get lucky and get into UCSC

All you can do is try your best and I am sure you will end up somewhere that will be a good fit.

Is Riverside or Ponoma better for Pre-med?

I would give the nod to UCR since they do have a Medical school and the Thomas Haider Early assurance program. See link below: https://somsa.ucr.edu/thomas-haider-early-assurance-program

Thanks! I also have 100+ hours from Boy Scouts and I am a part of NYLT which is a leadership academy where I taught others leadership skills. I volunteer at my hospital too. Does that bump up my chances for UCSC

EC’s are are only 1 part of your UC application and showing involvement and dedication outside academics is important but not a tipping point if you are not academically qualified (GPA/test scores/HS course rigor) in the first place.

Below is application review information for both Riverside and Santa Cruz.

  • RIVERSIDE
    *
  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores

  • Considered: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, First generation college student, State residency, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience

  • Note: A fixed weight point system comprehensive review model that culminates in an Academic Index Score to determine admission for incoming freshmen.

  • SANTA CRUZ

  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores, State residency
  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, First generation college student, Geographical residence, Talent/ability
  • Considered: Volunteer work, Work experience
  • Note: Test scores, GPA in required subjects most important. Personal statement very important.
  • Admission Selection: Important Note for Prospective Engineering Students: Choice of major does not influence the selection of first-year students, except for those applicants interested in a major offered by the Jack Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE). Freshmen who are interested in a BSOE program should be sure to indicate a BSOE proposed major. Students who do not indicate a BSOE program or who apply as undeclared might not be able to pursue a BSOE program.

Thank you! Last question I promise. How about Occidental College?
