I'm a junior and I go to a private school in the midwest. Since I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet, this info may seem incomplete, but I'm just looking for a prediction of whether or not I can get into Stanford as it is my dream school.

GPA : 4.0 (school doesn't have weighting system)
PSAT: 230

Classes: Hardest possible classes taken every year except for history, all AP's
Currently taking:
AP Biology
AP Spanish 4
AP English
Honors Physics (no AP available for first year physics)
AP Precalculus
American History (only non AP)

Extracurriculars:
Track Team every year in high school
Orchestra every year in high school (1st violin if it matters)
Newspaper club staff writer (looking for a leadership position next year)

Honors:
Top 10 in the state in the Spanish exam every year
Solo and Ensemble award

You need more ECs for stanford, i would think. And ten hours of community service isn't nearly enough. Thats how much my Leo Club requires each month!

and there isnt an AP test for pre-calc. im in pre-calc, and its an honors class at my school, but not an AP.

My school calls it AP precalculus for some reason, probably because it's part of the "leading up to the AP exam" program. The only class up there which I will actually take an AP exam for this year is AP bio.

Yeah, just do well on the standardized tests and you'll be accepted. The only fault I can find is that you have a lack of volunteer hours. I strongly disagree that your chances are 50/50. They're probably higher.

Well, unless the class is actually for the test, your AP classes are pretty much going to be considered as honors classes. Seems your school just stole the initials to make the course sound more impressive.

Anyway, I say take an AP test or two if you think you can this year other than the Bio. Self-study for applicants for schools like Stanford is actually fairly common, but it certainly can't hurt (unless you get a 2 or something).

Judging from you PSAT scores you're SAT's are going to be up there, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Enter some more competitions if you can find them, and yeah, you might have to look. Even if you end up last, you don't have to tell Stanford.

As for community service, try something like tutoring. It's actually not as bad as you think, unless you get stuck with having to teach some geometry kids proofs. I have no idea how to teach logic.

You've got great grades, so as long as your rank is up there too, right now I'd give you 20%. The problem is there's a hell of a lot of people with great grades that apply to Stanford, even considering how well you've done in Spanish.

LOL, not gonna happen. I'm applying no matter how low my chances are.

As for volunteer hours/extracurriculars, Orchestra takes a LOT of time, much more than you expect. That is why it might seem I'm a bit lacking in those areas. I'm going to try and volunteer all I can this summer to make up for it.

I entered a math competition this year, and qualified into the 2nd round, but I don't think that's too special :-/.

All of you seem to have great chances so far. Whoever is telling the first poster he "does not have enough EC's" is wrong. Colleges don't want to see a laundry list of crap that you did once or twice. They want to see consistency, which is what he has.

To the original poster, if orchestra really takes up a very significant amount of your time, you should try to do some competitions that can quantify your achievements. Most states have solo festivals that you can enter and get ratings in, and if you're able to get into your state's all-state orchestra, it's really an amazing experience.

While we can wish all of them luck, what this post shows is that Satnford is inudated with applicants with good stats. And those who think they have great stats--"almost top 10%." It just seems so silly to ask in these cases. Who knows? It's not about numbers. If you want certainty apply to schools where you are above the 75% in stats with great recs and ECs.
