Chances at Stony Brook

Hi guys,
I'm an American born citizen but I live in Lahore, Pakistan. I took my SAT this December (1st attempt) and got 1620/2400 (CR 520, M580, W 520) I know it's pretty poor and i'm thinking of retaking in January and I bet I could break the 2000 barrier but i'm not sure if Stony Brook will accept my scores-I think i'll be late. I have got TONS of medicine related EC's including volunteering at a hospital, 2010 flood relief, Punjab Chief Minister Dengue Fever Task Force Student Leader, etc, etc. I also have a great essay-or so i've been told :P, great letters of recommendations and an overall good profile. The only thing is my SAT score :|
Also here in Pakistan we dont have any GPA or class ranks but my overall score is an A grade.
Do you think I could get into stony brook or even better into their accelerated med program (bs/md)
Please reply soon.
Thanks!

p.s If you guys need my full stats (CV) I could also post it up

Provided the rest of your application is strong, you have a good chance.

Your SAT score is way too low for the Scholars in Medicine program, though.

Yea, if the rest of your application is strong you are sure to have a shot. I would know because at least 60 kids a year from my school go to Stony Brook and they have/had around the same stats as you. If I was you I would retake it in January because Stony brook I believe you have until February 1st to send in all your credentials, so just rush the scores. GL!

First off, thank you both soo much for replying! I gonna appear for the SAT again in January but the score will be out by around Feb 5th. Will Stony Brook wait till Feb 5th or not?
Also, do you know any way to get my CR scores up because I mainly have a problem with that. I have really improved my math and I believe I’ll get around 720 (minimum).
@DJStony, how much should my SAT score be to get into the Scholars in Medicine Program?
and @ Joe999788, did those kids get into the Scholars program or not?

Thanks!

The minimum for consideration is a 1350 (Math + Critical Reading). Competitive applicants probably have a 1450/1600 at least.

There’s VERY low number of seats available.

oh…so what about the normal undergrad program? Do you think i have a shot there?

I don’t, as a general rule, address “chance” threads… but I’ll say this. If you’re not happy with your scores, and you know you’re retaking the exam, LET US KNOW. E-mail us at enroll@stonybrook.edu and give us all the details; if need be, we’ll wait for those grades to make a decision.

DJStony’s stats are correct as a minimum for the BS/MD program. There’s almost no way I’d think you’d get consideration with an 1100; the applicant pool is just too strong overall.

sbuadmissions: Thank you so much for replying. Okay, I understand that I will not make it into the bs/md program but what are my chances of getting into Stony Brook’s normal/regular undergrad program with THESE scores. I have already registered for SAT II (bio m, chemistry, math 1c) and there arn’t any seats for SAT I left in Pakistan. If I get a good score in SAT II and have 1620 in SAT I, will stony brook take me?
And how about only on the basis of my SAT I result?-1620?

That’s what I mean by “I don’t address chance threads”; there’s no way I could answer a question like that here. Best wishes on your application!

Chris

lol thanks! and …Happy New Year!
