I am really interested at UT, but I know that it is very hard to get into. With SMU and TCU, I would need substantial merit scholarships to bring down the hefty pricetag. I would not be eliglible for financial aid however.

You are in at UT. Decent chance for McCombs but its going to be hard because your ACT is on the low side.

You will be in the mix with the thousands of others who are not in the top 7% but want in. The UT counselor I talked to said they admit 14% of the non-auto admit applicants. So odds are not in your favor, or any non-auto admit’s favor.

So make a great application and hope for a little luck.

Apply early to UT (August). Automatic at A&M but can’t say about business school.

Thanks y’all for the quick responses! Are anyone of you familiar with SMU admissions or how much merit aid I might receive from them? Also, how can non top 7% applicants stand out realistically if all they have left before applying is summer and 1st semester of senior year?

Usually higher test scores, AP scores etc should help the non 7% applicants. If you wait till October to apply, you wont hear back before March though.

I got in as a non top ten percent and I’m almost certain it was my test scores and unique extracurriculars. A&M in, UT Austin match. Write some stellar essays and keep those grades up! Start writing your essays in the summer and don’t turn in a first draft!

My son will be there with you applying to UT. He is not top 7%. His stats are similar to yours. You have a higher GPA and he has a higher ACT score. He’s going to do his best on the essays and see what happens. He is applying to engineering instead of business. The only thing from his senior year that will matter is his schedule showing AP classes and dual credit classes. That’s it. He will get his application submitted in early August.

You are an academic auto-admit to A&M just like my son. But UT is his first choice. I don’t know anything about SMU merit but if you find out please post!

Thank you again for your responses. For UT but for McCombs especially, what ACT score would they be looking for? Currently I have a 31 but if I were able to bring that up to a 32 or even possibly a 33, would my chances greatly increase? @kldat1 Did your son have a significantly higher ACT score? Also, is it always best to apply as early as possible? If I applied before November, I would not have my SAT subject score in but I know those aren’t required.

My son had 33 ACT. You still have the June ACT to raise it a bit. Every point helps.
