Chances at Top Tier Schools (HYPSM etc.)

Hi everyone, I'm new here, and I was hoping you guys could give me my chances at HYPSM, some matches, and some safeties, and some tips on helping to improve my application. Here are my stats as of right now:

Numbers:
GPA: 3.87 UW (School does not weight, I have taken the hardest courseload including math at the University) Freshman year, i had a 3.7 and I've had roughly a 3.95 ever since then. No excuses for Freshman year, I just wasn't a very motivated kid, and I didn't really like school very much.
Class Rank: Inside Top 10 Percent, outside Top 5 Percent Something like 45/540.
SAT: CR 800/M 800/W 780 (Essay 11) Total: 2380
SAT II's: Math IIC 800, Will take Physics, US History, and Literature in June
AP: World History 5, Calculus BC 5 (AB Subscore 5), Will take APUSH, AP English, and AP Physics in June.

Extracurriculars/Awards:
Captain of Junior High Fed Challenge Team (3rd Place Regional Contest).
Captain of Junior High Knowledge Master Team (9th Grade) 1st Place in State.
Captain of Junior High Quiz Bowl Team (9th Grade).
Quiz Bowl 10th, 11th Grade.
Knowledge Master 10th, 11th Grade.
Federal Reserve Essay Contest 2006 2nd Place (11th Grade).

Volunteer at Museum of Art and Anthropology at the University
Volunteer at Senior State Games, Basketball and Track and Field
Volunteer at State Historical Society
Principal's Cabinet in Junior High

Piano for 10 years some little awards.
Violin for 5 years, no awards, in school orchestra.

ARML National High Scorer (Also highest scorer on state team)
USAMO Qualifier
GPML State 1st Place
Captain of Math team

Summer Camps: MathPath 2004, MathCamp 2005, State Governor's School 2006, this summer I think that maybe I'll do research at the local university?

Please chance me at:
HYPSM
NYU Stern
U Penn Wharton
U Michigan
Berkeley
Northwestern
UChicago

Also, in what ways can I improve my application within the next half year? How bad is my class rank/GPA? Thanks for reading all of this I realize it's alot, so thanks for taking the time :-).

id say HYPSM and UPenn are all semi-reach to high reach lol..
but youll probably get into at least one
maybe a couple

everything else is a match

also consider im still a high school studend heh

Pretty much all of them are high reaches to small reaches.

Who knows... college admissions is a crapshoot for everyone basically, you might get lucky.

But how could I increase my chances of getting in? Are there any glaring weaknesses in my application other than my Class Rank?

the only thing I can think of is that I don't know how much you can depend on junior high awards for applications.

You accomplishments in math & stellar test scores will outweigh your so-so class rank (at least for HYPSM standards..). Nice job on ARML and USAMO! You are obviously talented at math.

I'd say you'd get into just about any college if you choose to apply somewhere early, as long as your GPA doesn't take a downward trend.

What are you looking to major in? If you are interested in engineering or majoring in any of the sciences, I would encourage you to consider Duke.

However, from the schools you have I'm taking a guess that you are interested in business..

I'd say the one thing you can do to increase your chances is to keep competing in math and maintain or possibly raise your GPA.

Good luck next year!

Good Guess CoolaTroopa I did forget to mention that I would like to go into business (Hence Wharton and Stern). My GPA has taken an upward trend since Freshman year (thank god!) But yeah, Miss Barbara you are right I shouldn't depend so much on junior high awards for applications (though junior high here includes 9th grade, so they're technically freshman year awards). Thanks for the advice everyone, does anyone think that possibly doing alittle research could help my application? I live in a university town so it's not too hard to find a professor if I want to...

Let's just say, your SAT's and accomplishments in math completely destroy mine and you have a nice set of other EC's too...and I'm headed to Princeton next year.

The only thing is that your application is going to be highly weighted towards math, which puts you in direct competition with a very qualified pool of similar applicants (including lots of internationals). I'd say you're still very competitive, but there are people every year rejected from HYPSM with your stats (and plenty accepted to several of them).

P.S. I was at MathPath 2003 =) I designed that dragon+sheep t-shirt, but I don't think it was used in 2004. Kip used to teach at my school.

"Pretty much all of them are high reaches to small reaches."

HIGHLY disagreeable

HYPSM - these are anybody's guesses for nearly everybody except for, say, Intel competition winners; I say apply! Try to get in top 5% of your class too
NYU Stern - In
U Penn Wharton - In
U Michigan - In
Berkeley - In
Northwestern - In
UChicago - In

Good stats overall! You're pretty well-rounded but not so much that it seems that you're doing stuff just to put it on your application.

I would highly disagree with your call that he's in at Wharton.

I would work on some community service maybe?

I think people are too concerned with extracurriculars. If you're lucky, you can get into a fantastic school with crappy EC's and great academics, but your chances are much less with great EC's and poor academics. Does anyone else have an idea about this? I think people are too concerned with racking up volunteer hours. On some apps (Columbia, for example) you simply write down what years you did stuff, no space for hours. theres also only 8 lines. For my columbia app, im benifiting from the loophole that im starting volunteering at the end of 11 grade so i can say i did it in 11th grade and they wont know that i only did it for a month. is this cheap? feedback appreciated
