I just finished my junior year and will graduate next year.
Freshman year - took all regular classes, Spanish 1
Sophomore year - Honors English, Honors Biology, Spanish 2
Junior year - trig/pre-calc, AP Literature, AP U.S. Government, CP Chemisty, Spanish 3
Senior year - CP English 12, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Psychology, Spanish 4
Of course, I took other classes my high school year, but they were all basic ones that I didn't list.

3.88 weighted GPA as of last semester's report card - waiting to get my record card for the end of my junior year
Ranked 28 out of 266 as of my last semester's report card [I hope to bump up 2 people so I can be in the top 10% of my class]
Elected National Honors Society President next year [only 1 senior gets this]
National Honors Society [Junior and Senior year]
Ping Pong Club [Junior year, maybe continue senior year]
Project South Africa [Junior and Senior year]
Outdoor Adventure Club [Junior and Senior year]
I'll have 250+ volunteer hours by the end of the 2009 year
SAT 1 Score - 1740
SAT 2 Scores - TBD I take the SAT 2 next Saturday [random question - if I took AP Literature last year, I should take the SAT 2 English Literature test right, or does it go over different stuff?]

That's basically all I can think of, I don't really have any ECs. I just started volunteering in the fall of my junior year since that's when I got into NHS and I'll have had 250+ hours a year from then, since I hope that they bump up for my below avg SAT I score and hopefully my bad rank, etc. What are my chances of getting accepting into UCI under a biology major? I plan to become a pharmacist and chose AP Chemistry over AP Biology my senior year.

I keep on reading on here that lot’s of ECs are good. What are some ECs that you recommend? Do you think I should at least start now or the beginning of my senior year to do them or just not even try?

I’ll be volunteering at my local hospital in their pharmacy section this fall to hopefully get a feel for it. I’ve been asking around but can’t find any pharmacy places that will let me shadow or anything. Do you guys have any recommendations? I hope that these things will better my chances even slightly of getting in.

i just skimmed whatever you wrote.

which ECs: do whatever you like. the pharm stuff is really useful once you are in uci and start working on stuff to get into pharm school. its good that ur working on it now though. look to get something along the lines of of a pharm tech degree or something. i cant remember.

in terms of new ECs, there’s not much you can add that will carry significant weight to your application.

there’s a reason the EC sheet on the UC app has a section where you put “hours/week” in. doing a crap load of ECs dont mean as much if its always 1-5 hours per week for each EC. ive heard of some ad coms saying anything less then 5 hours/week (or something like that…) is pretty much ignored. being elected president of some club is nice and all, but show that you do something with it, otherwise its just a popularity contest.

everything looks fine, except for the slightly low SAT score. if you can get over 2000, you’ll be good.

lastly: a lot of kids go into UCI’s bio program looking to be doctors/pharmacists or whatever. a lot dropout. not a knock against you in anyway, just keep a backup plan or something else in mind. a lot of kids go in narrow minded and miss a lot of other great things that fly right by them.

for the hours/week sheet do people put hours/week for each EC they do or is it the total hours/week of all of their ECs combined?

yeah my SAT score is killing me. i can’t believe i got the same score. i guess it’s better to get the same than drop to a lower one.

are all bio programs going to be as hard as UCIs? like is biology a major a lot of people change for all colleges in general, or is it just specifically UCI?

thanks a ton for replying!
